Slide covers?

Got caught today in some horrible winds . . . dust storms, cracked windows the whole bit. 50mph plus. Heaven only knows what the gusts were. In the middle of the desert, two lane highway so no place to stop and wait it out. The slide cover on the divers side partly unrolled. We stopped and in the wind, I said it was horrible, put the slide out and in again. It rerolled, but I do not know if it locked into place. Finished the trip at 45mph for two hours.
So, how do I tell if this will not happen again (without wind) at freeway speeds? I honestly can't tell if it broke or not.

If the topper rolled up it should be fine. Mine broke sitting in the back yard during a bad t-storm. New spring from zip-dee (about $120). Zip -Dee has decent directions on their web site.

On my inspire there are locks you pull down to secure the awning after you put the slide in. They are black tabs that you pull down and that locks the cover in place.

Really, locks? Do I take that rod that I lost a few years ago and pull the tabs down? I never knew we were supposed to do that. Man do I feel silly about that one. In eight years, never have locked it in place. Going to get a step ladder and look it over.
