Clear Coat

My clear coat is peeling off on the rounded part of the roof, all the way around. The top of the roof never had any, and it started peeling from the edge where it stopped on down. I am thinking I should just peel it all off down to the seam. Have others dealt with this?

My 1995 CC had peeling clear coat all around when I bought it 5 years ago. In the last two years the peeling has expanded down the sides and rear cap. Each time I wash the coach I use a plastic scraper to remove any new peeling. All of my peeling seems to be only on the white/cream areas of the coach. Once I reach the darker areas, the clear coat is well attached. This forum has had many posts on this subject.

My 2000 Allure was doing the same. I had professional painter prep and reprint the entire roof from drip line to drop line and from the top of the top of the windshield to the rear drip line.
I'm happy with the results.

The problem typically is that CC did not put a base coat paint under the clear coat on the white portion of rigs of the time. Clear Coat does wear out with UV exposure, but releases from the sub surface more easily when there is no paint over the fiberglass.
The proper fix is to have the peeling areas cleaned, base paint applied, and then clear coat applied.
I had this done in 2002 on the brow of my rig for $1,000. That repair is still good.
In the past three years I have removed all the clear coat from the white areas of the driver side and rear cap. It has peeled, with the help of a razor blade, in sheets as large as 2'x2'. Then I have sprayed in my driveway with new clear coat from rattle cans of SprayMax 2K. I have no previous auto painting experience.
I get shine, and good looks from 10 feet. The closer one looks however the more one can see the edges of the repairs. I have used other clear coat spray cans. Those areas have failed within 18 months.
Since my rig is worth so little in market value and I have the time to sand and polish the clear coat applications I am happy with the result.

We still get compliments on the rig in rv parks.

Join the club Al. Our coach was peeling from the top drip rail all the way up. I also had a section peeling in the area of the water heater. A trip to Puerto Penasco last year took care of everything. They sanded all of the clear coat off of the front brow down to the windshield, sanded the portion from the drip rail up to the top and sanded the side. They then color matched the gel coat and painted all areas, and the applied clear coat. Excellent job by the way. I also had some hail damage fixed on the hood of the Jeep as well. Total bill was 700 bux.

Any coach that had white or beige color as part of the paint scheme was not a color coat of paint but the tinted gel coat applied to the whole coach. The color graphics were painted on and then entire coach was clearcoated. The exposed gelcoat areas only have the clearcoat applied and because of UV and poor adhesion, the clear coat fails and peels off.
My coach started around roof crown and has now progressed down to areas of the side wall. All the peeling areas are the white/beige with only clearcoat applied. The color graphocs areas are all in tact. About a year ago I stopped at Creative Coach Works near Orlando and they wanted near 32k to do a complete repain and clearcoat of the coach. For that I think I will live with it and just keep applying the wax.

We have a 36' Intrigue, no slides with the same problem. We will probably get a repaint. I've had 3 estimates, highest $18.5K + $2K for the roof, two others for $11.5K and $12.k + roof. Seen paint jobs from all 3 companies, looked really good. There is a difference in process between the 18.5 and others. May try one more thing before getting it painted. I've been taking the clear coat off with a pressure washer. Several weeks ago I used a razor scraper and think I can get all of the clear coat off. Will do that and wax and see how it looks. Presently we are in Branson MO, close to one of the paint shops, will check it out in person. I did take all of the clear off of the brow and waxed, looked pretty good, we'll see!!
