Oil Pressure on Silverleaf

I noticed that the oil pressure gauge on my dashboard varies with changes in pressure, but the Silverleaf System reads a constant 55 pounds of oil pressure and it never changes. I was told that the Silverleaf system would read a constant pressure until the coach hit 100 hours of service and that it would then register the actual measured pressure. Well, nothing has changed. It still reads 55 and I have just over 200 hours on the engine. Why don't I get accurate oil pressure readings on my Silverleaf? Any ideas?

The answer is that Cummins orginally used a variable sensor which allowed the Silverleaf to read actual Oil Pressure. This switch had problems, it was causing Engine Shutdown, through false readings. So, Cummins went to a HardWired Switch which if your Oil Pressure drops to around 8 PSI or so, it will shutdown the engine.
The result is your Silverleaf will always READ 55 PSI, you could have Cummins change the Switch to the variable, but you take the chance of False Engine Shutdown.

I had that problem with a faulty oil pressure sensor immediately after having my Cummins serviced at Cummins Coach Care in JC and it caused my coach to shutdown on I-5. Quite an unnerving experience.

My advice - do nothing to increase your chances of that happening.

Like Tom, I also had an engine shut down (in SFO Bay Area traffic during rush hour). It was dangerous-you can't believe how hard the beast is to steer when the power steering shuts down with the engine. It was the same as Tom's - faulty oil pressure sensor. The engine can be restarted and will run from about 5 to 15 seconds and shut off again. Cummins spent 2 days with us in a Safeway parking lot trying to solve the problem. The final solution was to cause the computer to always read 55 lb. pressure.
My 2002 Intrigue is 11379 and Tom's is 11419 which might suggest a batch of faulty sensors. Cummins people told me that public transportation rigs are required to have an "override switch" to keep the engine running to prevent the type of emergency that results from this situation. I believe the dash oil pressure instrument and red light (which continued to read good) is satisfactory.

Hi Rob,

Just to add to your last statement - there is one OEM oil pressure switch that feeds the solenoid that straps the house batteries to the alternator output.

There is also two oil pressure senders: one feeds the Cummins ECM and the OEM one that feeds the dash oil pressure gauge. The OEM is Country Coach.

Hi Rob,

Where is what I would do if the problem is a faulty oil pressure sender. Have a 55 ohm resistor which can be attached to the connector that is normally connected to the engine oil pressure sender. Sounds like that is what Cummins did to get your engine running.

The read out system as sold by Cummins "RoadRelay 4" reads the engine oil pressure to the pound and refreshes the information many times a min. It gets it's input from the ECM. The new software (free for the asking) is more RV friendly. It does not depend on what CC does to the engine.

My oil pressure, as reported by SilverLeaf, at highway speeds runs between 48 and 52. My analog dash gauge (ha!) shows a constant 40. but, then, I had forgotten that I had a dash gauge.

Dick, I believe that the silverleaf does not track the oil pressure in the ISL Engines, something about false readings causing the engines to shut down wherever they happened to be. When driving, mine reads 55lbs always on the Silverleaf.

If you have the Silverleaf can you disconnect the dash analog oil pressure guage? My guage fluctuated all over the place. I changed the sender on the engine. This worked for a year or two and it is again fluctuating.

I recently installed a silverleaf on my ISL engine. No oil temperature reading. Silverleaf told me it should display pressure (which it does) but on ISL no oil temperature. Should be the same as the coolant, wouldn't you think? Larry

I'm getting what I consider accurate readings on my Silverleaf for oil pressure. Bill, if you get a constant 55 I think you should dig further with CC and/or Cummins.
As I understand it our ISL engines don't have the sensor to monitor oil temp. Either CC didn't order it, add it or something to that effect. But it's all guess work on my part.

OEM sensors are those added to the engine for use by Country Coach - e.g. oil pressure sender for the dash gauge.
Cummins has an independent set of sensors which go only to the engine ECM and sometimes redundant with the OEM sensors - e.g. two oil pressure senders. The sensors going to the engine ECM are the only one's that can be readout on the Silverleaf if the Silverleaf software supports that sensor readout. The sensors that the ECM uses are more complex and different from the OEM sensors. You might ask Martin Perlot what readouts Silverleaf supports for your engine. A 55 psi constant Silverleaf readout may be due for two reasons: the Silverleaf software needs an update or the ECM sensor has be bypassed and a resistor network is being used inplace of the sensor.
