CLASS REUNION - co pilot

At the re union I purchased the co pilot navigation system for use on a lap top computer. Before leaving JC for Newport, Oregon I set the system for my destination and off we went.
It was fun, listening to the commands and Karen watched the map and directions on the screen. After a few miles the voice said turn left and I did. It wasn't the road I would have chosen but as you know, computers are never wrong so on we went. We were heading in a westerly direction so I thought perhaps the computer knew more than I did.
After a few more miles and making all the required turns according to the "voice" the road got narrower with many curves and then climbed and climbed.
I was tempted to check with the map but decided this would be a giving up to early, after all the voice was very insistent and seemed confident!
We got to a point where we couldn't turn around even if we wanted to. Fortunately no oncoming vehicles. This went on for miles then suddenly the road which had been nicely paved suddenly turned into gravel. We stopped and were trying to figure out our next move when a vehicle approached from the other direction.
It was the local Sheriff. He told us that we were OK and the gravel only spanned about four miles then we would be on hard top again, just to take it slow. duh! He said our GPS would lead us without problem!
After about thirty miles we came out of the woods (literally) and found a wider road which took us to highway 101 at Waldport(sp). From there we headed north toward our destination without problem.
However, according to the computer we reached our destination fifteen miles south of Newport. Guess what, I must have selected the wrong street number and instead of heading to Pacific Shores via Corvalis (the easy way), the computer took me by the most direct route (I had it programmed for RV vehicles) to the wrong street address. Is my face red.
First time out the program did what it was supposed to but as they say, "garbage in, garbage out." Moral of the story, if you purchase a system in the future remember my experience and double check your destination.

David, I think the ability to quickly and easily tweak the route is one of the most important requirements of a Nav system. Once you get the correct route programmed into the nav unit that is built into the Pioneer system in the coach, it is great. But, it is much easier to set the route up in a pc program such as Streets and trips, using the mouse.

As the Pioneer rep was demonstrating how to set up the route, even he had trouble altering the route that the system had selected.

LOL!! I have used the Delorme mapping programs for several years, but I check the routes that are given and frequently change the way I go. While they map plot the shortest way, it is not always the best way in an RV--as you found out. I love using a GPS--I am very "directionally challenged" and it helps keep me out of trouble.

Concerning Co-Pilot, I used it for a few years. The best part of it was that if you didn't like the street/road it routed you on, you could turn onto another road and it would then reroute you using that road.
Many others now do this, including Street Pilot III, which I now use for routing with spoken/written directions.

RVing is an adventure, remember?

A couple of other comments.......

I'm at the factory and just heard that CC is offering an option for four wheel drive for off roading. Would you like to place an order?

The other comment is.... RTFM.

Sorry we didn't get a chance to talk a little at the rally. Let's make it a point to do that the next time our paths cross.
