very black diesel fuel

hOPE SOMEONE CAN GIVE ME SOME INFO ON WHY THE DIESEL FUEL WOULD BE VERY BLACK. the clear bowl on bottom of the filter is full and its very black. changed filter 3 times and still black. starts and runs ok but i know it should not be jet blask.

Bill, We also experienced this. I noticed the fuel was dark and some goo present in the sediment bowl when changing the filters. Even after annual replacement every four years, average 12,000 a year.
I used the Power Service brand bio-bore to kill the growth in the tank last year, and left for the west coast from Florida. Around Deming NM. it felt a little lazy, then struggled climbing an overpass. The check engine light "lit" and Silverleaf recorded "low accumulator pressure" code. We limped into the SKP park in Deming and went to NAPA, they had filters in stock. We changed filters and power was back to normal (ISL370), no light, no codes. After only 3,000 miles the dead algae had clogged the filters. After the treatment, a year later the fuel is clean and performance is still good.
Unchecked the algae continues to grow in suspension, throughout the tank, once treated they become a residue on the bottom of the tank and clog the filters. We're full timers for 6 years with 143,000 miles and the rig is performing great (knock on wood).
Power Service makes several products, I used the one for algae that time.....hope this helps....Skip

This is diesel that has sat around for too long, possibly a year or more. It is full of live algae. This needs to be "polished" or disposed of. Polishing is the procedure for cleaning fuel and a local petroleum distributor can refer you to whomever in your area does this.

Very common in boats that set for long periods. Agravatred if tank is only partially filled and left for a long time as moisture develops with temperature swings. I even had the fuel line plugged and cleaned it out but kept blocking new filters. Fuel pollishing took a considerable time with multiple large filter changes. Bioside can kill it but then the dead algee is still in the tank. Bioside prior to storage is highly recommended.

Microbes -- bacteria and fungi. You need something that will kill the infection in your tank and also break up/disperse the dead guys after you have killed them. I am battling this myself right now, I used Power Service's Bio Kleen to kill the infection but now am having to add Clear Diesel to disperse what I killed. I would use Algae X as recommended by Larry Feather -- it will do both jobs. Be sure to carry extra filters. If Algae X doesn't work, then you might have to consider fuel polishing. Also remember to change and carry spares for your generator and hydronic fuel filters.

When working in Florida we would recommend this for taking care of the algae that can grow.
