House battery suggestions wanted

Hi Group. I would like to know if anyone has changed over to a group of 6 volt golf cart batteries from a pair of 8D AGM batteries. Is it a more efficient setup? I am about ready to replace my 2 8D Lifeline batteries and wondered about changing to 4 of the 6v golf cart batteries to replace the 2 8D batteries. Is there a lot of difference in overall size of the configuration. Maybe I won't have enough room to switch! Macke 2003 Magna 42' Resort #6277

I have called Lifeline on that same issue. They recommended the 6 volt Golf Cart Battery. I installed 6 of them works great. Since I installed the Golf Cart Battery they have a slightly taller battery with greater storage ability. You may want to check on the new battery before you purchase anything. I do not know a great deal about batteries so I have to rely on the expertise of other, so far so good.

I changed out the two 8Ds in my Resort earlier this year. I installed 6 US Battery model US 145XC2 each at 251 AmpHours 6V. The fit tightly in the battery tray but they do fit. I measured very carefully before buying them from the local supplier. The 2 8Ds total about 500 AH while my new setup is 753 AH. These are wet cells but, as you know, the resort has excellent access to the battery for routine maintenance.

You have to look at the size specs carefully as they are not all the same width and length. Height didn't matter to me.
I had new 2/0 cables made for the series wiring and additional parallel cabling.
I am very pleased with the performance but that is based on very limited use. I'll be at Rocky Mountains NP dry camping for a week this June so we'll see how I feel in July.

I changed my two 8 D's for four Trojan 6 volt AGM's and have truly enjoyed the results. It is amazing how slow the draw down rate is through the inverter.

My 4 Trojans 6 volts take up the exact same space as the 2 Lifeline 8D's.

I'm happy with the 4 6V replacements. They came from Costco and were a little over $100 a piece. They take less room than the 8Ds, but have slightly less capacity too. I almost had room for 6, but was shy by less than an inch. I also use an auto watering system for around another $100 and wouldn't be without it.

George, Charles, and Jim--- I thank all three of you for your responses. I will now start checking prices for 6v deep cycle wet cell batteries to replace my two 8D's. As I read the replies I gather four 6v will suffice. If I were to use 6 batteries I would get longer use times, but woulkd have to modify the compartment. I really do not want to do that. I appreciate your help, and thank you, again. If you think of any other ideas or concerns, please let me know.

Just a small point. You do not have to do any modifications to your battery bay to fit the six 6V batteries that I linked. They fit in a double 8D tray. Four of them will provide the same capacity as your double 8Ds.
On the other hand if you want greater capacity with 4 batteries you can go the L16 route. These batteries are the same measurements as a normal 6V but are much taller and are somewhere in the range of 400 AH. That supplies 800 AH with 4 L16s. One of our contributors, I think it is Smitty, did this on his coach and is very pleased.

George is correct that so far I'm pleased with the 4 L16's. Have you felt supported AH wise with the 2 8D's? If so, then 4 6V's will cover you. If not, and you are OK with wet cells, then George's solution with 6 6V's is an economical way to get the 753AH's.
I wanted non gassing. And the faster recharge rates that the Lifelines AGM's provided. Came close to going with 4 8D's AGM - but did the math and feel 800AH will support us well, with reserve capacity.
Sure, money always comes into the thinking. But in this case how you use your coach, and your energy needs is also important.
