Roof AC

I am camping with a RV group and one of the Guys said he heard that roof AC,s are falling off the roofs do to the bolts holding it down become loose. I took the plastic cover inside the coach off and the 4 bolts holding it in place were loose. Both AC units had loose bolts, it takes phelps screwdriver and 5/6 wrench.

Don't over tighten the bolts or the compression mounting ring will collapse or shrink and allow vibrations to be transmitted through out the coach. Then the only cure is to replace the ring. They probably should be replaced anyway after these many years.

Typically the roof AC uses a one-inch thick foam seal between the AC unit and the roof surface. The mounting bolts are tightened evenly until the seal is compressed 50% to 1/2" and no more. If you are having leaks around the seals and they are already compressed to 1/2", it is time to change the seals. The seals can be seen from inside the coach.
