Fuel Tank Sender

Can anyone tell me about the tank sender that CC employed in 2008? My gauge never reads anywhere near what is in the tank by my calculations and it sort hovers full the 3/4 when its less than a half, and then suddenly drops like a stone. I keep track of miles between fills so have a good idea where I am but I would like to sort this sender?
