coolant filter

I am going to flush my coolant system & replace the coolant with CAT ELC. Could anyone give me the coolant filter number that I would need? I assume since I am putting in ELC it would be a "non-chemical" filter.

Fred, on my C-13 the NAPA Gold 4070 fits, though your fitting might be different. You could take the brand/number to the parts shop and ask for the same size in a blank filter.

Fred, I change my coolant filter once a year and have a coolant SOS test done at my local CAT Service Center, when I have the oil changed. Last year, at 3 years, I was still good without any booster. This Sept will be year 4.

Curious why you are going to CAT ELC as I assume your coach came with Fleetguard ES Complete. I have been looking at my options and talking to shops and the consensus seems to be that there will more work involved as far as using a cleaner and the additional flushing. Second why not go with the CAT or Fleetguard OATs product which does not require periodic testing.
Not trying to be a jerk but these are issues I have be wrestling with myself

Dan, ELC does not require periodic testing. CAT did recommend a boost at 3 years but they are now finding you could go longer and that appears to be my case.


It is my choice to do it . . . for the annual detailed chemical report on impurities, which would be a precursor to unusual wear problems.


I sleep better knowing the engine cooling system is in top shape . . . don't be 'penny wise and pound foolish' with an engine.


As for the flushing, I've lost tract of the many posts by others on this board saying they only got 50-70% drained. So why put a very good coolant in a contaminated system? Flushing once ought to really enhance life of the coolant, don't you think??


Just the chemist in me talking. It's for these same reasons I also get the CAT SOS oil test every annual change.

I bought my coach used & don't know what coolant is in it or if it has ever been flushed. I want to change the coolant & have the system flushed to establish a "benchmark" for myself. I did some research and called the Cat hotline & they recommended I replace coolant with ELC. The gentleman I spoke with stated that the ELC would be compatible with any residual coolant left in the system after flushing. Also was told to go ahead & change the thermostat. I believe you're right about the extra flushing creating some more work, however I feel this is the correct way to go considering the age of my coach & the fact that I don't have any maintenance history. The ELC should be checked periodically, but from what I understand will be good for at least 3 years at which time it may require a "booster" & then will be good for another 3 years.

Hi Fred,

If you are going to the problem of a full flush and establishing a new baseline moving forward. I would really consider the OAT's approach. I bought 30 gallons of distilled water, and had my shop flush out our system with this, after a chemical flush. Yep, new thermostat too, and because of age of our coach, new hoses all around.
I went with Final Charge, as the chances of finding it on the road if needed, were higher:)!
After a proper thorough flushing, the little bit of residual of the old coolant, IMO, would not be a concern.
Perhaps call another independent CAT shop, and ask for a second 'CAT' opinion. Or, check in with CAT Man Wolfe, over on RV.Net or the FMCA boards. I think you will find that Brett Wolfe would recommend the OAT's coolant. (He is where I got the advice to pay the extra labor for the distilled water flushing.)

Many long term advantages to going the OAT's coolant way.

Get rid of the coolant filter and go with CAT ELC. You cannot go wrong.....I have used Cat ELC in my last three diesels without any issues...........

Your coach came with Fleetguard ELC per CC. I also wanted to be extra cautious and had the full coolant analysis test performed. Based on the normal test report my local CAT dealer and the Fleetguard tech line said that I was wasting my money changing it before it was required. So I bought the two thermostats to carry with me in the event of a thermostat issue and when that comes up I will flush and probably go to the CAT OATs product. As a heads up three different CAT dealers did not have both thermostats in stock and finally I ordered them in from my local no sales tax dealer.
