Sudden loss of power traveling down the highway. Engine still running but throttle does not change RPM. We are in Shreveport, La and can't find anyone to service this problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Could be throttle sensor on the pedal, mine went tits up earlier this year and it was cheap and easy to change. It's a Williams Accelerator control, check out the numbers on the unit.

Some engines are now controlled electronically. If yours is this way there will be a throttle position sensor attached to the backside of the throttle pedal. This could be your culprit. If you can check engine codes, a bad TPS generally raises a code.

Do you have a king throttle or what kind is your throttle?

A bad throttle sensor does not necessarily throw up ECM codes, mine did not, it was pure fluke testing everything it could be! Michael

We had to rig up a string to the engine and used it to get us to the next town. Not able to find anyone on the Labor Day weekend to work on it. We stopped to eat and when we got back to the coach. The throttle was working. When we get back to Dallas we can find a shop that can check it out. Any suggestions on places to take it. It has a Williams control on the pedal. But I think it's Kings controls.
Thanks for your help.

When I had loss of throttle on my "96 Intrigue it was due to stuck closed Pac brake. I now use my rocker switch to turn off after used and "ok". Jim Veen, #10299 '96 36 ft. Intrigue.

Sorry I can't be of more help. My King Throttle control was replaced before I purchased my '97 a few years back. Mine still will "act funny" occasionally so I am very interested in the results of your repairs. Mine cuts off then immediately is fine again. I can't imagine the distress caused if it just quit.
Best of luck with repair and keep us informed please.

Not familiar with your coach but do you have ATC (auto traction control). If engaged will result in loss of engine power and throttle control

I'm not sure what happened but its work fine now. We drove 400 miles no problems. I don't know if they could fine the problem now.

I just had a King Controls throttle/cruise module repaired last month.
The manufacturer is long out of business, but a former employee/engineer bought the patents etc. and still services them. He generally has a 24-hour turnaround time if you can remove and ship him the module & cable. He will also walk you through diagnostics over the phone to narrow in on the problem.

Another thing to check if you're having intermittent issues is the ground for the King Cruise module (on or near the engine) and the ground for your brake light relays (front drivers side compartment). Rust or an otherwise bad ground can cause the throttle modules to malfunction.

We had a similar problem on our 2000 Intrigue with 350 Cummins. Engine would either not respond to throttle or would just stop. Happened about ten times and we couldn't determine the cause. It finally totally failed and we found the the oil pressure sensor connected to the ECM was bad. Originally, the ECM was programmed to derate the power when the oil pressure was low. If still lower oil pressure was detected it would only idle and lock out the transmission!. When it failed (the sensor has a strain gage inside) the engine would start and then turn off in about 5 seconds. These sensors are now replaced with a standard pressure switch and the ECM reprogrammed to so that if the oil pressure is less than the setpoint when the engine with shut-down. The engine has two oil pressure sensors. One for the ECM and one for the oil pressure gauge. So it appears that you have good oil pressure but the ECM is getting information that the oil pressure in low.

This drove us nuts and on several occasion nearly caused a safety concern when the engine stopped at a bad location. The engine usually restarted after a minute and would run fine until the next intermittent failure.

Hope this helps.

I had the very same problem and it turned out to be the ground wire from the ignition relay to the ground bus. The wire came loose and the engine was running but would not respond to the throttle, in my case the dash instruments also quit and when I shutdown it could not get a restart the key would not even engage the starter. Did your instrument panel gages also quit? If so I would look for the ground wire from the ignition relay. I also had to replace my King control many years ago that problem gave me a transmission fault message "Do not Start" and the engine stayed at idle. I have some pictures of the wire locations if you think the ground may be bad, let me know if interested.

Thanks to all for suggestions. I was leaning toward the intermittent ground issue myself but its worked well for quite some time so never went digging to check. Jack I would appreciate any photos or directions for checking the ground.

Mark M. thanks for posting the contact info. This is apparently one of those nagging issues many will have to deal with that we find out over the years.
I have also had issues with intermittent Pac Brake. So it seems it could all be related.
Thanks again Terry '97 Intrigue 10392

Terry,

I posted some pictures of my rewire job for the grounds under the dash. There is one photo that shows the loose wire. This was a poor design by CC. Using a solid wire ground bus for stranded wire is not a good design, over the years the set screw become loose or cut the strands of wire. This is all located in my coach in front of the passenger seat behind a removable panel. Of course nothing is easy, I had to remove the dash top to get the job done.
Any questions let me know.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have the oil light coming on and off going down the rode. But the oil pressure gauge is always showing good oil pressure. I think I'm going to check out changing those sensors. That may be the problem.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I have a curent part number for the oil pressure sensor if its the same as my Allure 325hp. I replaced mine this year due to warning light flickering and sometimes sticking OM.

I have the pressure sw off now and I have it on order. The problem is the brass stud broke off in the block. That is the bottom part of the switch. It's not easy to get to. I have a right angle drill. So I have been able to drill it out. The first easy out tool broke. Now I need to try another easy out tool or drill it out and tap it. Any thoughts.
