Power steering fluid HELP!!!

Yahoo Message Number: 92643
Was just going through my rv (2000 Affinity) and found that the large reservoir tank to the right of the engine is low. I have found that it is the power steering reservoir. Now here is the question. Does it use power steering fluid or transmission fluid? I would think power steering but have also been told some systems use transmission fluid. On top of this the fluid is red like transmission fluid. Please help!

It has always been my understanding that power steering fluid has more heat resistance than tranny fluid. Trans fluid is simply a lubricant and subject to foaming. With that said, the two are used for PS, but my personal preference would be a PS fluid; why take any risk?

The factory calls for ATF in the hydraulic reservoir. My reservoir actually has a label on it that states to use only Dexron II, but that is no longer available. I use ATF+4, it works fine and is available at all auto parts stores. This is also the fluid that drives your radiator cooling fan. I believe the reservoir holds 4 gallons total.

Almost forgot.... You need to check for leaks as there should be no usage of the hydraulic fluid. If you have a hose going bad you could have a major fire if it suddenly lets go!! Not a pretty thought.

ThaT reservoir supplies fluid noT only To The power sTeering buT also To your hydraulic fan. I replaced all my hydraulic lines and the fan motor and at that time I contacted country coach and they said they use Dextron.

My first thought was why are you low on hydraulic fluid? My advice would be to Make sure you don't have a leak in the area of your hydraulic cooling fan. Your fan could be blowing it aall over Your exhaust pipe which could lead to a fire.

Use transmission fluid. The hydraulic system runs both your power steering and your cooling fan.

Do not use transynd in the Hydraulic system. Dexron is preferred.. Transynd will eat seals and cause the hoses to eventually fail.
