Merry Christmas to all:

We will be traveling to Hobbs NM late January from Surprise AZ. I have not been down low across the US. Is there anything I need to know about the roads ect ect. Always your advice is much appreciated.

If you are going thru Carlsbad and over the pass next to Guadeloupe Peak I would stay on I-10 thru El Paso to Loop 375 ( Joe Battle) then exit and head North to Montana Ave turning east toward Carlsbad and White City. I would stay over in Las Cruces at Hacienda RV Park, about 360 miles from Surprise. I'd try timing your entry into El Paso about 9:00 AM for smoothest traffic flow.

If your an early bird you need hit the center of El Paso before 6:15 AM. As I live here, I go the old way exiting on Airway or Hawkins and turning right on Montana. The problem is you need to time the lights and you can't do that during rush hour. The last time I drove from El Paso to Hobbs it took 5 1/2 hours in the coach. And thats driving 65 on the flat and level and pushing 70 between Carlsbad and Hobbs. Its about 300 miles from Las Cruces to Hobbs via El Paso.

If you want to take the scenic Route and the weather is good you could go from Las Cruces to Alamogordo, to over the Mountains via Cloudcroft to Artesia and then to Hobbs. I used to make that trip quite a lot back in the 80's and 90's. But again be very care full to watch the weather, CC's don't like Ice and snow and Cloudcroft at close to 9000 ft does have both when a storm comes thru. Make sure you have plenty of fuel leaving Cruces, your holding tanks empty and your water tank full in case you get caught out in the middle of no where and have to lay over on either route.

My interest is to get to Hobbs first to visit some family and then take a trip to Carlsbad, I would like to stay on interstates as much as possible. I thank you for your advice and will save your email address to check back with you before we start out in January.

You'll probably want to by pass the Cloudcroft route then. The road from Carlsbad to Hobbs is 4 lane and the road out of El paso on Montana is four lane till you climb to the plateau, then its good two lane road till you get just before White City as I remember. Anyway going over the pass is 4 lane before White City, so when you are down in 3rd gear going up a 7% grade it won't be much of a problem. I'll say this, you are going to find out what the wild west was like on this trip. That's not to say there aren't great sights to see for there are. But after you leave Carlsbad there isn't much between there and Hobbs, excepting a lot of barb wire, a few Antelope, oil or gas wells, maybe a cow or two, and straight shot north to the North Pole. Bring your long underwear and umbrella.

I can add my agreement to staying at Hacienda, we made the trip from Carlsbad to Tucson last year and stopped at Hacienda, easy in and easy out with good sized pull through sites.
If you like winery there is a nice little winery and pizza restaurant on the corner before the RV park. Good wine and some great Italian food to match up with the wine!

One scenic alternative, unless you are in a hurry. Take the 101 loop around Phoenix to the north then take the 60 to Wickenburg where you pickup 93 to I40 just east of Kingman.
