Lazy shifting from 5th to 6th

Another new issue to contend with ... our 2002 Intrigue has a Cummins ISL370 engine and an Allison 3000 transmission.
On our last trip it was very reluctant to shift out of 5th gear into 6th gear. I have to back off the pedal a little to get it to shift to the higher gear even when driving at 50 mph. This is a new phenomenon. Any thoughts? Steve B #11382

I would disconnect the batteries for a minute or two to reset the logic on the transmission. Then you'll have to drive the coach and let it relearn your driving habits. Of coarse I'd make sure the fluid level is correct and the fluid isn't polluted. When my 98 did that is was the wiring harness that connected the transmission to the engine ECM had become compromised from heat from the engine. The second time was the radiator failure allowing coolant to cross contaminate the transmission fluid. If you have Dexron in the transmission, I would change it out for Transynd. You might check the color and smell of the fluid also. If it isn't rich red color, and smells its time to be changed.

I had a similar problem this summer. I'd suggest you check for transmission codes first. You do that by starting the engine and letting it idle. Then, at the switch plate press the two arrow buttons simultaneously. Any trans codes will appear. From there you can call Allison's 800 trouble number or find yourself an Allison service center.
In my situation the trans was slow to shift from first to second. The trans codes pointed to a shift sensor at the transmission that had to be replaced. Actually, it is a common problem because its in a place that attracts a lot of dirt and debris.

It sounds like the engine is working harder than necessary. That 'could' be caused by a dirty air filter, especially if this condition came on gradually.
Dirty fuel filter would cause a loss of power, but also an engine miss or skip accompanied by a "Check Engine" light flashing.
Before you waste money, check the air filter - replace as necessary and take another ride.

A dirty fuel filter will not always cause an engine miss. A miss is more likely to be an injector. It will not always cause a check engine light. Most of the time it will not set a code.
A plugged air filter will usually cause some black smoke in the exhaust.
If the engine is coach is slow to shift into 6th gear the ECU may be seeing a higher engine load due to lack of fuel.

Another Item to check is a charge air cooler (CAC) for leaking.

I have the same problem which is addressed in the owner's manual. They say it's normal and suggest putting the transmission in neutral and then again in drive. Then it will downshift or upshift.
