Engine access, Allure 470

I may have to help my local Cummins shop gain access to the top of the engine. They really want me to be there when they start removing stuff in the coach.
I can located the fasteners in the engine compartment. I know I have to remove the wardrobe doors so I can remove the lower door track. I can see the rectangular access panel in the floor which extends inside the closet floor.
What else do I need to remove? It appears that I might have to remove the carpet covered box that encases the power cord reel. Really not sure until I start pulling up carpet (CC has it stapled to the access panel....how stupid was that? Why did they not use velcro??)
If anyone has had to do this on this coach and can give me any labor saving tips, it would be appreciated.

Gary, Last month I had CAT adjust the valve lash on my C-9. I have a 2005 Inspire so I don't know about the power cord reel. I removed everything inside that was required for engine access including the access cover.
The closet doors simply lift up and out of the track. Remove the four track hold down screws and the track lifts right out. The access cover bolts are a bit hard to find. However, you can feel the carpet indentations. You can get a good idea where they are located by looking in the engine compartment ceiling from the outside. The carpet was first laid down and then cut along the access hatch. In my case the corners were not completely cut through. The easiest way to lift out the heavy access hatch is to screw a cabinet handle onto the hatch right through the carpet. When you remove the handle the small holes you made are not visible. I would recommend you install a new seal or you may have engine fumes entering into your bedroom area. I just bought an adhesive backed weather seal from Home Depot and installed it right on top of the existing seal. I also laid down a plastic carpet protector film throughout the coach.
I think the more you can do to set up & protect the area the the better off you will be.

Ron is right and everything you can do to avoid labor time will help. I believe they are reluctant to work on Motorhomes because they are afraid of damaging or getting oil/grease on carpet, etc. So the more you can do will save time and money.

Ron, thanks for the info. Are you saying that I do not have to remove the carpet from the cover to get to the fasteners? I poked around that cover pretty good and I saw no evidence of any fasteners. I figured I had to pull the carpet completely off that panel to get to them.

Are they screw heads or hex bolts? From the engine compartment I can see they are about 1/4" threaded bolts/screws.

Mine are hex bolts, I believe they are 9/16 heads, maybe 1/2, can't remember exactly. I just pulled the carpet back a little bit in the bolt areas.

Take an ice pick to find the hex bolt heads. Use an X-acto knife and cut an X in the carpetover the bolt. Insert socket. Presto.

The top layer of 3/4" ply, with the carpet and padding glued in place is held with velcro to the access panel which is bolted in place.

Thomas, thanks for that clarification. Now it makes sense. The carpet and padding are stapled to plywood which is attached with Velcro to a steel panel. So, I should be able to pry the carpet covered plywood off and not disturb the carpet.

Gary. I'm the owner of an 06 intrigue 12047 400hp and I am curious why Cummins has requested access to the top of the engine Which engine? Mileage? Symptoms? New EPA Regulations? Thanks. Bob

Bob, I had a suspicious engine oil sample that suggested coolant contamination in my oil. Cummins is suggesting it may (unlikely but possible) be a leaking EGR cooler. The only way to properly test that cooler is to remove it from the engine and pressure test it. They would need access to the top of the engine.

However, the good news is we did an oil change and repeated the oil analysis after some additional miles. I just got that result today and it is entirely normal.... no issues. The plan is to repeat the analysis in about 4,000 miles to ensure a good trend.
