Tire Truing

My Allure has a noted tire hop in the front at speeds above 55 mph. New tires put on by dealer (Michelin 295/80's) and they used beads to balance. I've used Equal in my previous coach and it was smooth as silk. I have replaced the rather soft Koni FSD shocks with Koni's SP3 which seemed to transmit more of the hop to the seat. I've had alignment done.
My local Michelin big truck tire dealer says beads are no good and both wheels need to come off coach, beads removed, and tire/wheel balanced on machine. They claim Michelin doesn't make tires out of round. Another commercial truck tire shop that has truing equipment also says he would first remove the beads and try balancing the tires on his Hunter machine before anything else.
I spoke to a fellow in Charlotte, NC who does mobile tire balancing and truing. He claims he can check/spin the tires on the coach without messing with the beads and either balance or true them. He says most of the tire shops don't use enough beads to do much of anything.
So, who to belive?? Anyone have any experience with getting these tires trued?

My Inspire had some of the same issues. Found out when the mounted one of the tires they didn't clean the bead area on the rim. It had deposits of rubber and dirt from the previous tire. They let the air out, knocked the tire off the bead and cleaned the surface. Put air back in spun the tire on the MH and watched it spin. It was much better.

The service tech this happens quite often.

Our Allure (33') had some problems.
We did all the same things you did. Had a good truck spring and alignment shop check the toe-in and it was out. He said on CC's you should have it aligned and check the toe-in annually. We also found a suspension u-bracket that was cracked in the front. It finally broke. We had the truck spring shop make 2 new brackets. We also put on new shocks. We also had the ride height checked and adjusted at the factory. Alignment was done by the tire guy who put on new tires. (laser). Balancing (Centramatic) done at Love's Truck Stop Tire shop. Drives great now.

Dickman's Les Schwab in Junction City allows me to watch and ask questions every time they rotate or install tires. And they don't even charge extra.

The dealer is feeding you a line of B.S. that Michelin doesn't make tires out of round. They probably make less than anyone else, but no company is perfect. The solution is to spin balance the tires properly. There is a spec and if they require more than about 6-8 OZ. to balance (the bigger the tire the more OZ. allowed) then they are out of round and Michelin should replace them. This is assuming that the spin balance machine is good and the operator knows what he is doing.

When I had my XZ2's installed in 08, the front pair had to be rotated on the rim to get the balance and the run out to Dickman's tire installers preferences. They finally gave up and brought out another tire. The current set of Continentals ( 2012) caused no problems at all. I know, I watched.

I agree with Rich's write up. I had 2 front tires that were out of round and Michelin replaced them at no cost except for the FET. I purchased the new tires from Les Schwab in Junction City and they installed the 2 replacements 2 years later, no problems since.

Out of round is a physical shape, the measurement for it is runout. Tires that take too much weight to balance are out of balance, although many times and out of balance tire can be fixed by deflating and rotating the tire on the rim180. The idea behind this is the tire and wheel heavy spot landed in the same place. Out of round MAY see improvement but not as likely, oh and an out of round condition will most likely also cause an out of balance condition, but not always.

It sounds like the tire is going out of round at speed. If it is, there is no amount of "truing" that will fix it. Have the techs jack up the front end and spin each tire up to speed and observe the tire from the side. You will be able to see the tire in action.
Have them replace the tires, nothing can cure an out of round tire. Been there, done that.

Hi All

They Make what is called a Road Force balancer For smaller wheels but they most likely make them for larger set ups.
It spines the wheel under a lode like it is going down the highway
