CA. Interstate I-80

I am considering using I-80 from Reno area into SF Bay Area in a couple of months. I am asking if anyone has used I-80 recently? I lived in the Bay Area for years and would not take the coach over the road due to its poor condition. I have heard that they have been doing some repaying and if so I may try it again.

Thanks for any info.

I have driven that road many times the last few years and haven't noticed it being too bad. We drove from Reno to Sacramento and back as recent as last Sept and it was good.

I do know it can get a bit rough due to mandatory chains during a good part of the winter. I have found that just avoiding the slow lane (where the trucks drive) avoids most of the roughness.
It is a pretty steep pass, but beautiful! I wouldn't hesitate to take it anytime, winter or summer.
Good luck!

Can't talk to I80 West however, I think that going down I680 would be the best way to the Bay Area. The 680/4 split was done a few years ago. No toll going over the Benicia Bridge. I680 meets I280 at 101. Lots of construction due to widening. I do not like I880, think the lanes are narrow. We live by the San Jose Airport feel free to contact us.

Jock, I can respond relative to the section from 505 to 12 (Napa exit). This part of eighty used to be terrible but has now been repaved and added lanes in parts and is very good. Came through this section yesterday so this is current information. I came through around 12.30 PM and traffic was moving at the limit. However, I usually travel this section around three o'clock and it is busy in both directions at that time.
Not sure where in the Bay Area you are headed but if joining 12 to Napa or Sonoma be advised that the Jameson Canyon section is still under construction and (yesterday) single lane traffic in both directions. It would appear that the contractor is about to stripe the newly paved roads and it looks like two lanes in both directions should be available for most of the route in a couple of weeks.

Hope that helps.

David, currently in Napa.
