RV trip on the St. Lawrence into Canada

We are currently considering a RV trip from our home in San Diego to take the Cruise on the St. Lawrence. Has anyone done this trip, and do you have any suggesztions

Since you are from San Diego are you asking about the St. Lawrence River in Upstate NY?
We have never taken a cruise, other than one at the 1000 Islands area of NY, but travel the lower Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and ST. Lawrence from Niagara Falls to Massena, NY many times. I think we have stayed at about all the campgrounds along that route but have some favorites.
If that is the area you are asking about what kinds of info would you like?

Is the cruise the kind where you pull your rig onto the barge? Used to be a few RV/Barge tours that hit many of the intracoastal waterways. Sounded like a laid back way to see some of that history. The big one was R.V. Barge Tours (or something like that), but I thought they had closed down. Would be neat to see these back up and running.

From what he have been able to find out since 9/11 the barges and the couple of train tours have gone away. Maybe not legislated just insurances away.

Hi - our travel plans include a trip up the east coast in 2015. As always we will be taking our sailboat along and one of the places I have been looking forward to visiting is the St Lawrence Seaway. I would greatly appreciate any special insight into good RV Parks for extended stays of 2-4 weeks with good proximity to a marina where we can keep our 22' Catallina sailboat. It is too soon to be booking for 2015, of course, but I am collecting info for next year. Thanks for any info from the group

The best campgrounds along the US portion of the St. Lawrence are the N.Y. State park system.
Massena, NY. Robert Moses State Park. Has a marina within campground.. The locks are here and you can visit the locks and watch the Lake Freighters go lock thru. http://nysparks.com/parks/51/details.aspx
Waddington, NY. Coles Creek State Park. The Marina is about a mile down the road. This is our favorite along the river because you can watch the freighters going by from you site. http://nysparks.com/parks/72/details.aspx
Clayton, NY. Cedar Point State Park. Has a marina within campground. This campground would give you the opportunity to sail that part of the river and go out into Lake Ontario.

Those three campgrounds cover the entire St. Lawrence River on the NY side and there are plenty of places to eat and things to do and see . Take Passports if you wish to visit Canada.

Hi Richard... thanks for the input. A quick glance at these nysparks sites doesn't make it too clear about the hookups. We prefer full hookups whenever possible. I saw on these sites where there was a surcharge for electricity, but didn't see anything about sewer... Do they have sewer hookups or only dumping stations as is common in state park campgrounds. stays of a few days are fine without sewer but when we take the sailboat places we usually go for a minimum of 2 weeks and often more likely 3-4 weeks. And in those cases this requires a lot of moving the coach to dump, something we try to avoid. Also wondering if they have weekly or monthly rates... The NY state parks do have a 14 day limit and of the ones that I listed, only Cedar Point at Clayton has full hookups and a marina. There are sometimes ways to get past the 14 day rule.

I only responded with some of the campgrounds that we actually stay at. When we stay a long time at one without full hookups I go and dump when the timing is best. A twenty minute hassle but works for us.
There is another one, with longer stays and full hookup, that we stayed at many years ago and it has since been updated. It has spots for a few boats but you would need to verify you can dock a sailboat there. http://www.lisbonny.net/camp.htm
There are other campgrounds along that stretch between Clayton and Massena but none that we have stayed in. Most looked like seasonal places. You could look into this one for longer stays and keep your sailboat at Clayton. http://merryknollcampground.com/ This option may be your best bet.
Here is a very nice one we stayed at many years ago at Henderson Bay and is now a KOA and has what you are looking for. It is on Lake Ontario but not too far from the mouth of the river.
