Smoke Detector Recommended

Since our recently purchased '98 Intrigue's stove hood exhaust fan doesn't vent outside, and the close confines of the motorhome caused the smoke detector to sound too easily, one of the first things I did was to replace the detector with a First Alert "Kitchen" model detector. It's designed so that you can silence it for a few minutes by pressing a section of the faceplate (a short "beep" sounds every ~40 seconds to remind you of its standby status). It's much more convenient than removing the battery to stop the detector from doing its thing. And safer, since many people who die in fires have no battery in their smoke detector. I highly recommend the First Alert "Kitchen" model detector ... and I have no connection with the company. Or any company .

Dick,

Is your exhaust fan the type that is in the microwave? If so you may need to replace the charcoal filter.

Hi Dick,

The smoke alarm will not go off if you crack the window over the sink and open the overhead vent and put the fan on slow exhaust.

Thanks for the tip, Dick. I may check into the new one. For the time being, I just drape a kitchen towel over the detector. It helps to keep the alarm quiet and is visible enough for me to notice it and take it down after cooking.

Im with ya Dick. The factory detector in my Allure kept falling off the wall??? I finally realized that the bracket that it bayonetted onto wasnt made right...and couldnt be made to work right...so on our first shakedown cruise I went into the KMart in Jackson Wy and got that model....works perfect!!

I thought of replacing the charcoal filter, but the stove in this '98 Intrigue had never been used 'til we bought it at the end of June, this year. And the convection/microwave oven had only been used once, although there was no evidence of use there, either! The condition of those appliances and the rest of the coach reflect easy use, with little indication of wear, despite having 38K well maintained miles on it. Anyway, the new smoke detector has solved the problem.

Thanks. While that would work in nice weather, I'd hesitate to do that during, for example, the COLD weather we just experienced during our week in the Pennsylvania Dutch area near Lancaster, PA. For example, we woke up this morning to "froze hose!" The new detector has solved the problem, however.

Many years ago we owned a lightweight 13' Sprite travel trailer that we towed with a '76 VW Rabbit (the trailer was within the car's tow capacity).
The trailer was so small the detector was always going off, despite leaving windows open, etc. So I re-mounted it inside an upper cabinet door. We kept the door closed while cooking and conscientiously left it open when we went to bed. It wasn't a solution for everyone but it worked for us.
