Pre filling fuel filters

Well I guess to those who wait shall come the reward. I finally received the following response about prefilling fuel filters. It confirms my thought of it just being a contamination problem. I do now accept and will conform to the idea of not doing it. There was much concern on ther part about the E-mail having not been answered. I think the concern was genuine.

The reason we stopped the practice of pre-filling fuel filters is to eliminate one more possible contamination opportunity for debris, dirt or whatever to find it's way into the precision (tight tolerances) fuel system components on todays high-pressure electronic fuel systems .... systems which are built to much tighter specs and are far more sensitive to contamination.

As we've progressed from mechanical systems to the newer electronic ones with higher pressure, the impact of fuel contamination has greatly increased. This is somewhat compounded by the fact that rotary-type pumps on some of our engines also rely on the fuel for pump and fuel system component lubrication (the older inline mechanical pumps were either closed self-lubrication, or received lube oil from the engine's oil system).

Therefore, for engines such as yours, we specify installing the filters "dry" and then operation the electric lift pump for a sufficient period of time to self-fill the filters. In the case of the ISC with the Cummins CAPS fuel system, the Operation & Maintenance Manual, page 15-4 (for the one we have) says, "The ISC has a self-priming, low pressure system that purges the air from the fuel system. There is no need to prefill the new filter with fuel."

There are also precautions about cleaning around the filter before it's removal. We trust that you were provided the O&M Manual with the coach, otherwise the dealer or previous owner owes you the ones we provide with our engines.
