Bleating air horns?

My air horns sound like a pig with its balls cut off. High pitched squealing sound. what causes this? how do I fix it?

Remove the plate on the backside of the horn/s and you will find a thin metal diaphragm. Clean the diaphragm with 0000 steel wool and replace. That will usually solve most problems. Check to make sure the horn itself has no obstructions.

Hi Rich,

If both air horns are of the same length, then they will retain the same tone. CC installed two shorter air horns from Hadley Horns on many of the lower priced models, thus the horns don't sound very good. The simple fix is to contact Hadley and tell them of the length of your horns and they can sell you a longer, bass sounding air horn. The replacement is pretty simple; scrape off the sealant around the base of the horn, then remove the screws, and the horn. Disconnect the air line (bleed it down to zero pressure first) and connect it to the new, better horn, and reinstall the mounting screws. Then apply sealant over the attachment points. Charge up the air system and try the horn.
I purchased a Hadley "train horn", which consists of three tuned air horns, which replicate the sound of the railroad train horns, and is very loud, thus, attention getting. Now, when it sounds, everyone knows. I have since seen a few other coaches with the same train model horn, and the owners are very pleased.

Look for a critter nest in the horn. The end cover just pops off and then you can loosen the fittings and unscrew the horn to push something down the tub if you find a nest.

Jim, after reading your post, I now realize why I thought the Hadley horns on my older, much cheaper, Winnebago Journey sounded much better than the Hadley's on my Allure. The horns on the Journey were not the same length, thus the dual tone. The horns on this Allure are not short.... pretty long tubes but same length. They are loud but lack personality, IMO.

I will check on getting one shorter horn to replace one of these.
