Route Advice Needed

Yahoo Message Number: 97481
In mid-October we will begin to wander back toward Tucson. There is a route out of Junction City which goes through Oakridge and hits Oregon 97 above Chemult and then goes into Kalmath Falls.

Here is the question: After you go over the border from Oregon to California, you drive South on 139 through Tulelake and Canby.

At Canby, you have a choice to either go out of your way to Alturas and down 395 and again out of your way back to Susanville before dropping down to Reno. 122 miles.

There is another road out of Canby, 139/299 through Adin and down to Susanville. This route is only 89 miles. However, it looks like a small road.

Has anyone driven over this route and, if so, what is the condition of the shorter route?

Are there any good RV Parks along these routes?

Thank you.

We did that route last year on our way down to Lake Havasu. We went down 139 through Tulelake and Canby. At Canby we went on 299 to Alturas, then south on 395. Our thinking was to avoid the mountain travel through Adin. We stayed in Likely, just south of Alturas at an RV park with a golf course called a Likely Place, nothing fancy but space and peace and quiet. Likely has a general store and a bar, that's it. We really enjoyed it, golfed next day and got a discount on RV space. From there we went down to Standish and took a shortcut to connect again to 395, didn't go to Susanville. Then down to Reno. All good roads, enjoyed it way more than I-5!! Any questions, 360-815-2811 Linda Vandehoef

Shirley,

I am with Linda. Going through Alturas, stay at Likely Place RV Park off 395 and continue down 395 to Reno. You might check with Likely Place to see if the are open in mid October. You will need to decide from Reno which way to Tucson. Have been this way several times.

X2 on Likely Place.

Then down US395 south to I80 east to US50 east then to US95 south to US95 south. You can then go directly to Las Vegas or swing through Pahrump.
There's a quirky, rustic campground, Sunrise Valley RV Park, in Mina, NV that we enjoyed for one night.

Enjoy,

Hi Shirley OBrien,

As a retired tour bus driver I have driven this route hundreds of times.
Go through Alturas if your towing, If not going through Susanville is not a problem, two lane narrow highway but doable. I have driven them both. I like through Alturas > 395 to Reno better.
At Reno, take I-80 east to Fernley. Take Alt. US 95 south to Yerington. Alt. US 95 turns east at that point and joins US 95 South at Schurz. Follow US 95 Hawthorne > Tonopah > Las Vegas > US 93 > Henderson > Boulder > Kingman > I-40 east X-71. Exit 71 South/US 93 > Wickenburg > Phoenix > I-10 South.
There is a RV Park in Fernley, and a Truck Stop. The Park is so-so but OK for overnight.

Safe travels,
