Repair recommendations in NH or MA

Hello group,

We are in New Hampshire right now in need of repair. As soon as we try to start the coach, our Cummins ISC 330 engine cuts off. The engine turns over and sounds like it wants to start, but it dies after letting off the ignition. There doesn't appear to be a fuel leak from the hoses or filters and both filters are 2 months old. I can hear what I assume is the lift pump operating for about a minute after the key is in the "on" position.

We fueled up in Maine about 2 weeks ago, and there isn't any visible gunk in the clear fuel filter bowl. We were finally able to start the coach today after about 8 tries, when my husband pumped the gas pedal a lot. There was also no power when we climbed even small grades on our 250 mile trip from Maine to New Hampshire.

Any suggestions on repair facilities in the area or troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated. We are in Lincoln, NH on our way to the Catskills area in NY.

I suggest changing both of your fuel filters as the symptoms described are the same as I've experienced the two times I've gotten bad fuel. My Allure was built shortly after yours and has the same engine.

Hello all & sorry for the delay in reply,

We tried changing the fuel filters as Charles suggested but the filter would not prime like it normally does by putting the key in the "on" position several times. So we manually primed the filter and reinstalled. Coach would still not start unless the gas pedal was vigorously pumped and the ignition key held in for longer than normal.

On our way to have this issue looked at about 1.5 hours away, the engine shut down and we were on the side of the highway for about 7 hours until we were towed to a repair facility. We lost all of our coolant and the tech initially thought it was the recirculating pump, but thankfully, when looking for the part number he reached around and found a crack in the hose. It was replaced and tested with no leaks, yay!

So tomorrow they are going to troubleshoot the fuel issue. We hope it's relatively painless.

Its going to be a fuel pump issue or fuel injection pump. Have you noticed your oil pressure dropping? Mine did as the accumulator pump section allow ed diesel to mix with the lubricating oil on my ISL. On the ISC the issue was first one of the sensors on the injection pump, which would not allow enough pressure to operate the fuel injectors. After replacing the fuel sensor, 1500 miles later the distribution section of the fuel injection system failed, but replacing it did cure the entire problem, They ended up replacing the entire injection system .

Fortunately for me it was a warranty issue. It was costly as Cummins made the dealer replace one part after another until they replaced the entire injection system. That meant pulling the system on and off 3 times. The bill was over $5000 dollars as I remember. But if they had replaced the whole thing from the get go it would have been less than $3200 as I remember. That was in 2001 and prices have gone up considerably since then. My symptoms with the ISC were it wouldn't start when warm or hot. The next morning when it was cold the engine started running on about 3 cylinders. After about 10 minutes of idle the engine fired all cylinders. The only issue then was the coach would only make 40 mph. But the Techs at Cummins said drive the coach in you won't hurt it. So I drove 200 miles from Roswell to Amarillo at 40 to 45 mph, holding my breath. They replaced the sensor, but when I got to albuquerque and the engine quit 1500 miles later, the coach was towed to Cummins where a week later the coach was finally repaired. It seems there was a recall program on the engine the techs in Amarillo and Houston over looked that caused the pump to fail on the ISC. TWI 2004 Intrigue 117321. And 98 Allure ISC 30255 , maybe 30225
