Engine "missing"

Hi All,

Well, not missing exactly, but it has the same feeling as if it were a gas engine with an ignition miss.

Here are the signs/symptoms:

--Cruising along in the Texas plains, 63mph, 1625RPM, cruise control on and set.
Slowed to make a highway change, stopped momentarily for oncoming traffic, accelerated and re-engaged cruise and the missing started at a quite frequent rate --I disengaged the CC, the rate was probably 1/2, I then turned the cruise master off and the rate was very Infrequent, once every 45-60 seconds --I monitored the VMS 200 EL and the fuel flow dropped to zero when it missed --About an hour down the road, it "healed" and worked normal for the next couple of hours when we stopped for the evening.

We bought this coach new, and over the years it has had this same affliction 3 or 4 times. It has always healed, but it does cause some concern.

My diagnosis rules out fuel filters, as full throttle/max fuel flow makes no difference.

Put your diagnostician hats on and forward any thoughts/ideas.

We had a similar experience early this year. It turned out that the lift pump had a small leak and would only act up when we were at highway speed.

Don, using your Silverleaf go into Engine Diagnostics and view any "fault codes" if there, write down the code and call Silverleaf to give you the Cummins code for their Silverleaf code.

Did the Yellow Engine Warning Light Blink on and off during these events? if it did there would be "fault codes there will be "fault codes" listed in your engine history in the Diagnostic button.

If there are fault codes I think it may be your High Pressure Fuel Pump System, known as "CAPS" Cummins Accumulator Pump System". You should consider getting to an authorized Cummins Dealer and have them put it on the computer for analysis.

If no Fault Code is shown it is likely your Fuel Filters.

I had a very similar problem with 110,000 miles........When driving on the highway the engine would quit, tach would go to zero, speedometer would go to zero and some times there would be a brief warning buzzer. Also of this would occur over a period of time of only 1-2, maybe 3 seconds. Then all would immediately return to normal. This was a very frustrating problem that would occur from 0 to 4 times each day for over a period of 18 months. I called Country Coach, they sent me a relay which was located in the compartment under the driver's chair. After replacing the relay and checking all the electrical connections that I could find .........still didn't fix the problem.

I then took it to a local Cat dealer twice.......who worked on it for for several days and told me they fixed it.........replaced a different relay in the inverter compartment. Fortunately for me, they were honest and told me that the ECM was working great and did NOT need to be replaced ($1,800) The replaced relay still did not fix the infrequent problem.

Finally while visiting relatives in Sacramento, CA., I decided to take it back to CC. They were great. One of the tech's said, I remember you paint job, I think that I helped to build this coach and I'll fix it." Yes he did and was I embarrassed. Within a couple of hours, he fixed it. He told me that he thought that his meter was broken when took the big red Emergency Kill Button (engine compartment) apart to check the continuity of the switch contacts. The switch contacts looked brand new, no corrosion, all bright and shinny. The meter registered a surprising continuity of only 18% !!! He thoroughly cleaned the switch and the problem went away. Over 4,000 miles and no problem. I had taken the switch apart, and it looked brand new, but I didn't put a meter on it.......dumb me!!~!

Soooooooo, check the switch carefully.
