fan noise

I have a noise issue with my fan that has me baffled. When the fan goes to high there is a "whining" noise that increases in pitch with engine RPM. Sounds like an automobile power steering pump that is low on fluid. All is normal when the fan goes to low. I have done the following (to no avail) to eradicate the issue:
1) changed hydraulic fluid & filters
2) changed hydraulic pump
3) changed hydraulic fan motor

I also changed the fan controller about a year ago, although I don't think there's any connection between the noise & the controller.
 I've also inspected the fan & see no damage to any of the fan blades nor could I see anywhere where the blades may be touching the shroud.

I don't know what else to check!!

Has anyone encountered a similar issue, and if so, were you able to solve the problem? Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Fred,

I had a whining noise that increased with engine rpm when the engine radiator fan was on high.
At first I could not pin-point the source although it clearly came from the fan/fan shroud area. Turning the fan by hand with the engine stopped did not show anything rubbing anywhere.

In my case it turned out that the fan blades distort/bend enough when run on high to just catch the end of a bolt holding the shroud in a spot  probably bent by a rock kicked up when traveling. Look again and bend the fan blades somewhat one by one while turning by hand to see if there is a chance of them touching anywhere along their path.

Hope this makes sense.

You'll have to get under the coach armed with patience.

Dick,

Yes that makes perfect sense & gives me something to look for. I did inspect the fan blades but not the inside of the shroud to see if there may be something that could touch the fan blades.
What was the fix for yours--simply replace the damaged bolt?

See if the hydraulic oil has foam. An air leak in the suction line from the reservoir to the pump can allow air in and no oil out. And that can make the noise you are chasing.
