Rayzar Automatic Install

I finished the roof install. The problem with the Rayzar is that coax cable has to enter the antenna parallel to the roof. You can either run exposed coax through the roof and into the antenna or go the heavy armor route. I choose the latter, but it took a long time with adaptation of parts intended for another purpose and modifications of those parts.

I only had a short piece of vertical coax at the roof to work with after removing the pedestal for the Winegard omnidirectional antenna that came on the coach. I used a 90 degree F connector followed by a male to male adaptor, and then a short run of coax to the antenna. A thick piece of plastic tubing protects the coax between the conduit junction box and the antenna.

Hi, how do you keep your roof so nice. What do you used on it, did you paint it. Thanks Charles 2000 magna 5886

Two years ago after being frustrated with regularly cleaning the sides of the coach from fiberglass oxide running off the roof, I painted the roof with one coat of Interlux Marine White Fiberglass Paint, used for hulls above the waterline and decks. I added some non skid additive used for walking surfaces of boat decks, but only about 1/4 to 1/3rd the recommended amount as I am not walking on the roof when moving like on a boat deck. We have been long time boaters and have seen the results of this paint and it holds up well year around in the sun. I only used one coat as it does not get a lot of wear. As information, I considered using the Interlux two part epoxy marine paint. It wears better when rubbing against docks or being walked on but it is more expensive, the prep is more extensive and I did not feel that it was necessary for a roof.

I was on the roof last week, washing and cleaning, and I can see no sign of any deterioration of the paint. The roof is safe to walk on as it is no longer slippery when wet. (In the past, I had to be very careful walking on a roof, wet cleaning, rain, dew, or simply sweat dripping on a hot day. In those situations, I generally crawled. How many of us have slipped on a spot of sweat?)

Prior to painting, I followed the directions from the manufacturer. I washed and then lightly sanded the whole roof. I followed by cleaning all the sanding residue by wiping down with a rag damp with mineral spirits. (I also masked around the vents and other roof penetrations to keep the job looking neat, but this is really not necessary as no one sees it but me and possibly a service Tech.) It took 1 1/3rd quarts of paint for my 36 foot Allure, and as I remember, the whole job only took about 4 hours. The paint can be purchased at most marine stores including West Marine.

I have been very pleased with the results. I no longer have any oxide streaks down the sides of the clean coach. The roof is no longer slippery when wet, and I don't believe that the job will have to be done again.

First, keeping the coach covered when at home really helps. My coach only had 18,000 miles on it when I got it in 2006, but I didn't like the condition of the roof. I used 3M fiberglass cleaner on it which took a lot of elbow grease, but got it looking really good. Nonetheless, later on I noticed white streaks on the side walls. I took the advice of others on the forum and started treating it with 303 Aerospace Protectant. Since the coach is covered, and annual treatment is all that is needed to prevent white streaks and keep it looking good. I do wash the roof every other wash job.

Dennis, I have a question on your roof paint.
Did you use Interlux Interdeck Non-skid paint or Interlux Brightside Polyurethane.
If you used the Brightside and added the nonskid granuls to it, did you then apply it with a roller or a brush?

I did the same as George for about three years. Our coach was about 5-6 years old when we bought it. Took some catch up maintenance on the roof, and then a regular yearly wash of the full coach with Dawn, followed by Aerospace 303 and or Zaino ZCS on the roof top. Really helped cut down on the dreaded white streaks:)!

When we were getting ready to do our Solar Panel install, I decided to go with Buskote on the top. Main reason was to add a bit more help in the hot Southwest area that we travel in.

I did also look at the Boat Decking Paints and Two Step processes available, and feel they would have also done a very adequate job on the roof top. And, at a lower costs too... If considering Interlux, why not just call their tech support and ask what product they recommend for the roof top? Either way you go, adding some non skid is a good idea, to help cut down on the risk of slipping.

Best of luck,

Smitty

Sorry for the slow response. We are traveling, visiting friends and I have not looked at emails for a couple of days. I used Interlux Brightsides and brushed it on. Rollers waste too much paint when initially saturating the roller and I was unsure how well the roller would distribute the non skid. I also used the whitest paint they had to minimize heat absorption from the sun.
