Keylock near Parking Brake 2004 Allure

We have a key lock made by C&K next to the Parking Brake on the panel left of the driver.  I searched this forum and found 2 possible answers:

1. it is a key to enable communication with the ECM. If that's the case, do you have to turn the key "on" to have Cummins check the engine for fault codes? We are at a Cummins place and they say the computer needs to be "re-flashed" because it lost data.  Perhaps they just need to turn the key "on" ??  We think this is what LazyDays told us when we purchased the coach.

2. another respondent said that it's a lock for the Parking Brake to keep it in the "on" position to prevent accidental pressing of the Parking Brake to the "off" position.

Thanks for your prompt answers. They are going to re-flash the computer tomorrow.

Hi Lonny & Diane,

As I remember the key switch is used to read any fault codes stored in the ECM. With the switch on any codes should show up as a flash code on the check engine light on the dash. One flash with a pause then two flashes with a pause then three flashes would be code 123. Then you have to figure out what the code stands for.

I just loaded an app on my cell phone from Cummins that will talk with the ECM and give you lots of info, including fault codes and what they mean. You also need some hardware but none of it is expensive and it seems to work great. The best part is it works with Bluetooth so it's wireless! Here's what you need:

Cummins Fault Advisor, (Android Only) Search in Play Store for it.

Amazon.com: Newest Bluetooth V1.5 OBD2 OBD II Auto Diagnostic Scanner Mini...

Amazon.com: Xtool OBD2 6 Pin and 9 Pin Truck Cable Diagnostic Cable Sett...

Cummins also came out with another app called Quick Serve Mobile that you put in your engine number and it will give you all the part numbers for your engine. Can be a life saver when trying to find those hard-to-find parts. It works on my Android and I believe it will work on the iPhone also but not sure.

Good Luck,

Barney

Lonny,

I should have added this to my first response but forgot. The keyed switch has no effect on the normal operation of the ECM. Just routes the fault codes to the check engine light. It also has no connection to the parking brake.

I'm curious about whether the key is needed or if Cummins has a master that fits our coach.  I didn't receive this key when purchasing the coach from the Prior owner.

thanks! makes sense.  I think that is what LazyDays told us when we bought the coach in 2005. We've never used it since Cummins techs always uses the port in the engine compartment to access the ECM.

We just found out that for some reason they can't communicate with the ECM.  Something happened when we had it serviced and it was wiped out.

Lonny,

I am a little curious. What kind of service was being performed that would effect the ECM?

John,

My guess would be that they are all the same but I can't confirm that.

Lonny heard a noise in the engine area but couldn't tell where the noise was located.  We decided to stop at Cummins and have them check a few things that he thought it might be. We also asked them to check the ECM for any fault codes.  When they tried to do so they couldn't communicate with the ECM.  We had service performed on the radiator and maybe that affected it.  The last time anyone actually checked the ECM was 3 years ago. Lonny says there could be many causes of why they can't communicate with the ECM.  They are going to reinstall it and update it.  He asked them to check the belt and some kind of bearings. The belt had a hole in it and the bearings were worn out. We have over 120,000 miles on our coach.
