2001 Intrigue Alternator

I may need a new alternator. Not charging any of the batteries with engine running but fully charging all batteries on shore power or generator. I have been running for about three weeks like this until we got back home.

Does anyone know the part number for the alternator for a 2001 Cummins ISL370?

I am guessing it's a Leece Neville and does not look like an easy task to replace but I have good resources around here to get it done.

What voltage does your dash gage show when the engine be is running? If that is running over 13 volts then it Probably is not the alternator.

I should have stated that. In the past all gauges showed 13.v+ with the engine running but not now. Now it gets to about 12.3v+ or so when driving and I start the Gen. I also get the same reading at the batteries with engine running.

Don't have the part number, but we also have the same problem. Cummins in Ocala FL said it might be the regulator on the alternator. Won't know unless they take it apart and test it.  We've been running the generator going down the road until we can get back home to have it repaired. When we first bought the coach in 2005 the dealer replaced the alternator with a rebuilt one.

Had a problem with my Leese Neville a while back and while doing some research discovered they have a very bad reputation with the trucking industry. I decide to install a Delco Remy which cost new about the same or less that a rebuilt Leece Neville. Also stepped up to a 180 amp to replace the old 160 amp.

Thanks Barney, That what I needed and the pictures help.

If you did the replacement or watched I have two questions.

Is the ear on the bottom of the alternator threaded? Looks like getting a wrench behind there won't be easy.

Did you take the pressure off the belt using the belt tensioner.

I don't know if I will go new or rebuild. Will talk to the guys at the shop but this one is 14 years old and about 190,000 miles on it. I am leaning towards new and will look into the 5amp wire you reference.

Richard, on my 2003 Allure 1st Ave. but in August 2002, the Leece Neville Alt. Pt # is LN2824LC/ZZ-100, 160 Amp, may be the same as used in 2001.

It really is well worth it, if the alternator is in fact the culprit, to remove it and have it rebuilt.  Likely as not, it is something simple, such as a diode.

If yours is a 12v 160A, the number is A0012824LC OR 2824LC..The cost on mine was right at $500.00 dollars including next day shipping. If you can find a starter-alternator shop, you might be able to have it rebuilt. The deal with motor homes is with such poor air circulation around the engine compartment, the alternator is usually fried, so when you take it apart, the non metal parts usually comes out in pieces. Hope this helps!!

Ditto. I am like Barney. After researching rebuilds two years ago I decided to go with a new Delco Remy also. Remove and replace labor is same but Delco is a superior product with modern cooling technology. With electric mechanisms, cooler running means longer life  My tech said it was a simple installation. I purchased online from finditparts.com. They drop shipped directly to my shop. in a few days. Cost was way less than rebuild and bonus was new part Warranty.
IMHO, rebuild just is not a good option with the old Leece Neville unit. They run too hot. You may be repeating the scenario soon.

I'm thinking that I'm going to go to the Delco unit at my next major service. Would rather do this on my schedule and at my shop, then have it go out on me on the road. 10-11 years old now, the existing unit has done us well:)!

May step it up to a 200A unit, and related components, as the Lifelines can take a higher charge.

For anyone needing to replace the OEM unit, I have never heard a downside to changing over to the Delco. Better unit, runs cooler, and can be found at nice prices...

$.02!

Check the alternator field voltage.  If the 12 volt DC power to the field is not present, the alternator will not charge.  I had an issue once where the fuse protecting the alternator field was blown and I had to run the generator for two days while traveling before I could trouble shoot the problem.  After a couple of hours of testing at the alternator and tracing wires, it turned out to be an easy fix.

On our coach, wire number 79 went to the field coil of the alternator.  The fuse was located in the panel in the compartment below the driver.  My guess is the chance that the fuse blew is fairly low, but with a multi meter and with the ignition turned on, you can check the field coil voltage at the alternator.  My access wasn't great, but I could do it.  If 12 volts is present, the problem is at the alternator.  If it is not, the problem is in the wiring or the fuse, but check the fuse first.

My wire #79 alternator ignition (on/off) was broken at the alternator crimp end. Probably caused by vibration work hardening of the wire. Crimped on new ring terminal and connected to alternator. Has worked fine since.

When he pulled the alternator apart the Stator and other parts were shot. The cost to rebuild was about $265.00 so I decided on a new Delco 180 Amp. for less money.
