Air Dryer Cartridge Replacement

Is it necessary to replace the whole purge valve assembly? Or can just the cartridge be replaced? What is the rule?

Chris Snyder and Jim Cooley expected that a new filter and a rebuild would be all that would be necessary. But once Dave Remington pulled the unit down and inspected it, it was decided it needed to be replaced. I guess as the unit is pushing 13 years old that isn't surprising. I Have some other issues, too. Alternator, Front TV and a Directv receiver. TWI 42' 2004 Intrigue 11731

My coach spends all of its time in the west in a low humidity environment so the demands on the system are not as great as for some. The desiccant filter and the purge valve are two separate components.  There are no hard and fast rules. The Bendix guys says it depends a lot on the operating environment. If you turn the release valves and there is water or oil you know it is probably past time. I decided, with no facts, to change out the purge valve every other time I do the desiccant filter which I change about 2 to three years depending on where I am and what I am doing. When I changed my filter for the first time after about five years I changed both.

Thanks Daniel. Yes, I live in a dry western climate. The cartridge replacement I get. What I guess I don't understand is why you would replace the entire purge valve assembly as well if it is functioning. Perhaps upon removing the cartridge it becomes evident upon inspection if the purge valve needs to be also replaced. Right now, WW Williams is offering a deal to replace the AD-P1 cartridge for $128 installed or the entire assembly for $318 installed.

We replaced our cartridge and had the purge valve rebuilt at Colton Truck when we first bought our used coach. We had all of the receipts (Coach was bought, and serviced, at Holland Motors in San Diego (now San Marcos) area. Owner was having Holland sell his coach on consignment, and authorized Holland to print off all records for us to review. No history of replacement. Coach was built in Sept 2003, and we bought it 5-6 years ago now. Had under 13K miles on it at that time, and always here in Southern California area, so good chance even that 6 years or so old Cartridge was still in good shape.)

As I like to start all used vehicles with a solid 'line in the sand' maintenance wise, or baseline, position. We had everything swapped to establish this on the air cartridge.

While we have been in many states over the last 5-6 years of ownerships, we have not been in any heavy humidity. Probably 75% plus of our travels have been in the Western US. After reading many threads, and talking to a few shops with great reputations - I've adopted a 4 swap maintenance cycle for this item.

Purge valves can be either cleaned and inspected and continued to be used. Or buy a rebuild kit and install the replacement parts at the time of cleaning. Or just buy a rebuilt purge valve. At Colton, the gent rebuilt the existing valve with the repair kit. Last time I had the service, had a rebuilt purge valve put on.

If our traveling habits change where we are traveling extensively in moist humid regions, or if I see signs of moisture from the air valves (never have yet) - I'll pull the cycle back to at least a replacement cartridge every 3 years.

These are often neglected, and are such an important part to overall safety - this is one area to not cut corners:)! Stopping is good. Air brakes depend upon air. The Air Canister Cartridge and Purge Valve are a pretty important part to overall stopping...

I don't believe there is any effective way to test the purge valve other than observing its operation. These items are not generally in stock at Service Centers so I don't want to be hanging waiting for the part to show up and not having to option of whom will be doing the work. There used to be a rebuild kit for the purge valve but it is my understanding that the kits are no longer available. It is kind like changing engine thermostats, hard to tell when they will fail but they will fail and again an item they may not be stock or will fail in an inopportune time. After six years I changed out my coolant and thermostats even though every thing was showing good.

I recently had my Air Dryer assembly replaced with a remanufactured assembly which includes a new purge valve, cost was $318 plus tax and EPA charges. WW Williams is running a special on this through March. I had the work done at the Tucson location.
