Water Pressure Regulators

Yahoo Message Number: 105230
We have the CC OEM Pressure Regulator, believe it's a Watt's (Or, I could have that confused with our rental units:)!), and it is performing well.

I had a hose blowout due to water pressure yesterday. So have placed the brass hose bib regulator into the mix with our back up hose. Believe these are set to 20-25PSI(?).

Really notice a drop in water flow in the coach, so it got me wondering two things:

1) Does anyone know what the PSI is set to on the CC OEM Pressure Regulator? (Assume higher then 20-25PSI, due to the now lower water flow in the coach.)

2) Recommendation for hose bib attachable Adjustable Water Pressure Regulators? And, recommended settings for these. (We have one hose that I know is rated to 60PSI, that I could start using.)

TIA, and best to all,

Smitty

I checked the bib inline brass regulator, and believe it is 40 or so PSI. It's an older unit that came with he coach when I bought it, so it may not be working properly.

Still interested in adjustable PSI regulators, and suggestions for PSI settings.

Most folks use the Watts Adjustable Regulator. It is a true regulator not a flow re stricter. Most folks set them at 55 psi or so.

Thanks Mikee - That is what I believe is in my water bay now...

I had this unit sent to me from a friend:

Amazon.com: Valterra A01-1117VP Brass Lead-Free Adjustable Water Regulator: Automotive

Seems to get good reviews on Amazon.

I would suggest before you adjust pressure that you inspect or change your water filter. May be blocked.

A non-issue for us. We use an 'On-The-Go' water softener. Hook the park water line to the softener, outflow goes into the fresh water tank. We get about 5 in-coach days of use.

No water line pressure concerns, love the soft water, no sediment collecting in our coach lines which could eventually clog a line.

Have been in Yuma for going on two months. We have two hoses hooked together, running into the normal hook up of the rig. One of the 25' hoses is the robust Grey hose with SS couplings from the RV Water Store. (It's our primary water hose, and I have zero concern with it's ability to handle a bit more water pressure then normal.) I have two different back up hoses for when we need extra length: 1) is the standard white hose with blue line from Walmart/Home Depot/Lowes/Etc.; 2) Is the Handi Hose, which is a woven fabric that winds up into a flat carrying case. Bought the Handi-Hose as the back up to the standard white hose before we purchased the RV Water Store's hose.

It was the Handi Hose that had the woven fabric disconnect from the female coupling end. To be fair, we're baking in the sun at the low 90's all day. I noticed a small drip, and when I went to tighten the female coupling, the linen popped loose.

Lee - What is interesting, is we are using a Double 16K On The Go softer that this hose was connected to. (Have a 3' RV Water Store Grey Hose from the Bib to the On The Go.) This is a new/used unit to us, I bought it off of Craigslist, and the seller commented that it may need some new resin. I used the cleaner, then and have back flushed the unit twice. After we did two runs of recharging, and still only got soft water for about three days, figured the risen did indeed need to be changed out. Have some in route from On The Go now.

I'll do some more checking to see what the pressure is on the way out of the Double On The Go. Very possible that the Handi Hose's time had come, after on and off usage of about 4 years!

I do know we have pretty high pressure, as well as HARD water too, here. And never worried about the coaches water system due to the Watts Regulator in the coach.

With the old Camco like (may be Camco, can't see any markings on it) brass water reducer at the bib, we noticed a dramatic drop in the coaches PSI. So the water flow from the bib -> On The Go -> to the coach, is lower then the in the rig Watts regulator will allow to flow thru.

Oh, and Greg, thanks for asking about the in coach water filter. It's getting close to the normal time to change it out, and possibly the harder water Yuma may have been too much for it. I think I'll go ahead and replace the filter now too.

Sorry for the long thread, but wanted to provide enough info on what happened. Still think I'm going to pick up the at the bib adjustable water pressure regulator too, as I see no down side to it...

Best to all,

Smitty

I just replaced my water inlet with a Shurflo regulated pressure reducer which is set for 65 lbs. The older OEMs were set for 45 lbs while the newer ones were 55lbs as I understand.

I have a Watts whole house adjustable regulator for the outside hose bib when I need it. I don't worry about the coach plumbing because of the inline regulator. However, I have seen some hoses bulge pretty badly when the water pressure in the park was 100 psi. I just attached some pipe thread to hose thread converters on each end of the regulator and put it between the park hose bib and my hoses. I also have a whole house pressure regulator with hose thread adapters that I can use for measuring park water pressure when it seems high. I like the whole house regulators because they don't restrict the water flow like the simple RV regulators do.

My Magna has one of those built into the coach. It's mounted in the Water Bay looks like Factory installation.

We had great time at the recent Friends Rally at Lazy Days KOA following the Rocky Mountain CC rally in Tucson, Az. It was great to see so many travel buddies and fellow CC owners in one place again. The friends group had a lot of new CC owners attend for the first time. We had a great time. Eric Olstrom from Premier Motor coach service was there to help us out with repairs as was Bob Vinson. It always great to see them away from the shop. They are both great guys.

Jerry O'conner and his lovely wife were able to join us the last few days, which was a special treat. As I sit here at Premier having normal maintenance performed and TV, shocks and Air Conditioner replaced I writing to let you all know about the fun and good food we all had. We raised a bunch of Money for a KOA cancer children charity this get together.

We'll be heading home for Doctor appointments and my visits to the dentist. But are looking forward to hitting the road some time in May after Carol's final Cataract surgery. Don't know where we will be heading, but surly somewhere cooler. The southwest is not my favorite place to spend the hot months. I would like to visit Cheyenne, Wyoming to see the progress the UP is making with restoring engine # 4014, one of the last 4-8-8-4 Big Boys soon to be operational.

Eric just walked in telling me I need to test drive the coach. Twi 2004 Intrigue 11731

Well hers a familiar story after having repairs done. We started for home this morning but had to turn round back to Premier Coach service center. Seems the coach picked up rear vibration after installing new shocks. Erics guys checked and rechecked everything, but could not find any issues. I called Paul And Dickmans Les Schwab and he made some recommendations. So Eric and I went over to Redburn Tire center in Tucson, pulled the rear wheels and checked them all out. Seems the Steer tires we rotated to the back last fall were the cause.. So with all the tires rebalanced and returned to the rear and The two former steer tires that had been rotated removed with new tires installed and balanced the ride and its great.

As you all know I had changed from Michelin Xz2 to Continental HSL-1. It seems the two steer tires I had rotated last fall were the cause of my of my tire vibration. So now I am proud owners of XZA2 Michelin, via the FMCA purchase program. I don't know what the final cost will be, but I found out the list Price at Redburn Tire in Tucson is $800.00 each more or less for the 315 size. The guys working there are great, but as it is a Commercial shop and not set up for consumers, I recommend the rest of the family have somewhere else to go for fun, while serious work is being performed. This is not Bob Dickmans Les Schwab. in Junction City. So like many of you out there I am now the owner of a hybrid coach, with Michelins on the front and Continentals on the rear and tag. I guess I waited to long to rotate the tires, 25,000 miles 2 3/4 years and thats what probably took out the rear shocks. All is well now, and I want to Thank Brian at Redburn and Eric and the guys at Premier for their excellent service and going above and beyond to get me out the door and down the road agin. The Continental tire rep stopped buy and I decided to take advantage of Redburns offer to buy back the casings, As the Continetal rep said he couldn't guarantee any renumeration for the tire issue. At least he showed up, That's never happened with a Michelin or Toyo rep when I had issues. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

I did lear one thing by buying tires in the Southwest and not in the Northwest. All tires suffer from side wall cracking if not covered during storage or while parked in place for weeks at a time. So keep those babies covered. Continental does warrant side wall cracking, however , where Michelin doesn't. Seems Michelin has more natural rubber in their compounds, insuring their famous smoother ride. And like my former XZ2 these XZA2 have a great ride. But as before the steering response is not as fast as the Continentals or for sure with the stiffer side walls of the Toyo's. So it seems I will have to learn how to drive the coach again with the different steering response. I would have had to wait 4 or 5 days to have Continentals shipped in and I didn't want Firestones, so I went with the proven Michelins.

Eric and the boys did a great job performing the annual chassis and engine service. Servicing the Hydro-hot and Cummins genset. The Shock and front TV installation went very smoothly as promised, and some needed work in the engine bay was preformed admirably. We had some issues installing the new rear Air thanks to Dometics lax quality control, but what else is new with Dometic. Thanks to Eric for the fix. Eric should be getting his new paint booth soon and Charlie Lawrence will be the first with his 02 Affinity with the 11 color custom paint job. I hope to get my coach touched up this fall after we return from our adventures. Watch out for those barrels placed as warnings on I-10 with all the road contraction, one jumped out and got me, to the tune of $$$$>$$.

Michelin most assuredly warrants against cracking. They gave me an adjustment on 6 year old tires.

Drove the coach home today and there really is a difference between the big M and other tire makers. The guys at Redburn tires in Tucson were great and did a superior job. They may not hustle as well as the guys at Les Schwab in Junction City Oregon, but the end result was quality work. Tomorrow, I visit Redburn near me in Sunland Park NM to make sure the wheels were torqued properly as recommended by the the service manager in Tucson. . Looking forward to see how much the XZA2 will cost me thru the FMCA program.

I called ERIC today and thanked him again for going the extra mile. Ordered new shocks for the front end. I'm still not sure if I will be happy with the new rear air as the compressor seems to have a birdie that likes to sing from time to time. I hate intermittent issues.

I wish all those who attended the Rocky Mountain and Friends rallies in Tucson pleasant travels and hope to see you again in the near future. We traveled home today in 4.5 hours, 300 miles, and averaged 9.1 mpg. Aren't Spring winds wonderful if you are traveling the right direction.

Lyle, I hope you are reading this, we really miss you and all the others who no longer travel the roads of America in A Country Coach.

My first coach was a 34' Airstream Limited. And as I think about down sizing I wish Airstream would get its act together and build a 35' 10" limited again. There are some great updates since my 1984 unit, but also some serious over sites. Gee, how I wish American Industry would get its act together. Only Apple, Mcintosh Labs, VPI, and a few others seem to have their act together in my small world.

I had Goodyear on my 2007 Allure 42 Ft Siskiyou Summit when I bought it new and they frankly were very bad! I switched to Michelin and the ride was night and day from the Goodyear's however after about five years I did have some cracking on the side walls in which they replace them at no charge I did know about five years ago they had some issues with Manufacturing and supposedly are resolved today but
