Floor Heat

My floor heat is inop. Both units the one in the galley and the one in the bath. I'm guessing it's a relay or the control unit. I did check the breaker that is marked floor heat and it's good. I've looked all over for a control unit and can't find one. Floor heat is linked to the silverleaf but my guess is that it's not a silveleaf problem because all other functions of the silverleaf work fine. If the wires were broke under the tiles my guess is that either the galley or the bath would work and the other would not, but they both don't work.
Any ideas on where the control unit is or more troubleshooting ideas?

Jim help is out here what coach do you have and what yr is it? I would ck the GCFI, mine are located in the same cabinet as my breakers Darrell

Do you have Gold Heat thermostats? Check the GFI's built into them. Also from the thermostat GFI, check the load circuit, if the mat is bad, you will have continuity from the neutral to ground (ground fault). Gold Heat tech desk helped me (503 848 6190). They will even rent you the tool to determine exactly where your mat wire is broken under the tile if you want to go that far. I don't want to tear up tile though.

Hi Jim,

My thermostat for the tile floor is on the wall near the refer. We tried to get it to work, but could not. We were at RCV Custom Coach in Junction City and Bob found out that our thermostat was bad - $75 we had tile floor heat and were good to go. This taught me that not all tile floor malfunctions are caused by problems under the tile - I had originally written off the heated tile floor until we upgraded the flooring, but now we are happy warm campers...

Sorry All I sent the email from my ipad and it didn't have my coach signature. I have looked all over for the thermostats for the Gold In Floor heat. back traced from the 120VAC fuse panel in the bath opposite the vanity and it looks like it goes to a relay that is mounted in a J-box on the Pass side Outboard wall behind a panel under the vanity sink in the toilet. The relay has a green LED that is lit regardless of whether the 120VAC breaker is energized or not - which (I think) tells me that there isn't a fault / breaker / fuse problem between where the T-stat sends a call for heat to the relay. What I cannot seem to find is the actual thermostat that sends a signal to that (above) relay to energize the floor mats. I have in floor heat in my home and its a pretty simple system. T-stat calls for heat and relay closes allowing current into the floor.. about the only thing that can break is the t-stat, the relay or the mats themselves. I have TWO sets of Mats, one under the galley tile and one under the bath tile. I know this because I have two technician reports on the warranty cards (and there are two warranty cards) that specify the impedance determined when the mats were installed. BOTH mats are not producing heat so my feeling is that it is either the relay or the t-stat (which is likely one T-stat. The silverleaf panel lets me adjust the heat, Day / night settings etc, but it doesn't seem to be communicating with the relay that energizes the mats. There is also a mysterious Silverleaf setting called "dwell" and you an adjust dwell on both mats down from 60 seconds. I have no idea what that is for, so I've left it alone.

Help! :) Spent about 4 hours pulling cabinets and panels apart tracking this with little success (but a better idea of where everything else it buried).

Thanks Mike - I think your layout might be a little different than mine. My thermostat is somehow tied into the "silverleaf" total coach system on my coach... There's no separately mounted thermostat for the floor heat system that I can readily see.

After reading the current responses to this post, the first question I ask is "are you certain that the two mats are separately controlled?" On my coach, the bath and the galley are on the same circuit.

If that is true for you, then it would seem that there is a break under the tile (which was my case) UNLESS the thermostat is not working. My thermostat is located in the bathroom cabinet above the lavatory, on the left (it is a Gold Heat unit).

At an FMCA gathering in the unpleasantly smoke-filled casino in Coos Bay several years ago, I did find a Gold Heat expert who found a break under my tiles. Fortunately, at OMC it only required the removal of two tiles and their replacement after the break was fixed. Jim Cooley knew how to find two tiles that were almost a dead-on match for the tiles he had to destruct.

We've been loving the floor heat ever since.

My recommendation would be to use a voltmeter to check for voltage before and after the breaker, resistance of the heating elements (infinity means a severed wire), voltage to and from the power supply, signal from the thermostat demanding heat.

Check the continuity of the mat circuit with a voltmeter, that will tell you if it is the mat or some other component. The Gold Heat tech told me to take an extension cord, cut off off the receptacle end, wire it to the floor heat mat (from the wires behind GFI thermostat going to mat (Load), and plug it into a non GFI outlet, see if the mat warms up.I tried this on mine, and the mat did not warm up. I detected a ground fault when I did the continuity test, so I have a broken wire under the tile. That is the end of the story for me, as I am not going to break up tile. So one mat works and one does not. It is odd that both of your mats do not work. I suspect it is something other than bad mats, you are fortunate. Keep looking, you will find it.

Exactly what I would like to do. I cannot find the power supply and thermostats. Any help on where they are located would be a huge help.

On my 06 Magna, in the hallway, there is a cabinet  with both 120 v circuit breaker boxes, both 12 v boxes, master thermostat for coach (A/C, heat), and then 2 Gold Heat Thermostats (with GFI's internal to them, that glow red if blown). The 120 volt romex out of the back of the Gold Heat thermostats run thru coach and under fridge into a black switch box which converts to a blue wire (about the size of a coax cable) heading to the floor heat mats. I have floor mats in front LR and galley/bath, so 2 Gold Heat thermostats to control each.

Jim if your floor is like mine three are no thermostats, a thermostat senses the ambient temperature and cycles the floor on and off. Mine has a reostat

, just like an electric blanket it regulates current to the mat this is incorporated into the silverleaf again I think you should look at the gfci Intrigue 2007 12075

Follow up to this thread. We determined that the problem WAS the relay for the Gold Floor Heat. Our relay was not located under the fridge, where it is supposed to be, but rather, inside the lower cabinet under the sink in the Lavatory, on the left side, behind a false cabinet wall. The relay had partially failed, it would light green that it had power but the actual relay would not actuate. Replaced the relay and the floor heat worked!
