Yahoo Message Number: 104340
I am new to Country Coach and need some advice.
Question --- The manuals tell me in order for the diesel side of the Hydro-Hot to provide heat-- the roof thermostat must be on Furnace. Where is the roof thermostat ??? can anyone Help??

It's the comfort control system...same one you use for your AC. Just cycle mode to furnace.

On my 2000 Magna the thermostat is above the entrance door. You need to turn it on then push "mode" repeatedly until it indicates furnace. Usually there are other switches that must be on to show furnace. Look at your coach owner's manual for details. RUSS WARREN

our thermostat is on the panel next to the TV. Same as one that controls the AC and the heat pump on the AC. We never use the heat pump. Just our preference.

ps... when we are hooked to power we turn on both the electric and diesel switches on the Hydro Hot. When not on shore power of course we only use the diesel.

our thermostat is located in the bathroom vanity area next to the Silverleaf panel behind a cupboard door, the zone sensors (3) are located in the front, middle and back of the coach, they control both the 3 heat pumps/air conditioners and control the hydronic heating (2) zones sustem. we also have an electric heated floor but it is controlled by the Silverleaf system. if you want to heat the coach with the hydronic system use the zone switch to toggle from zone 1 thru 3, select gas with the mode switch repeat for zone 3. there is no zone 2 in this option Darrell. 2007 Intrigue #12075

It would help if you posted with a signature and info on your coach as their are many different ways to turn this system on. On my coach you have to flip two switch back in the bedroom control panel before it will show up as an option (furnace) on you AC panel up front.

If your electric elements are working correctly in your Hydro Hot or Aqua Hot, then there is no need to leave the Diesel Burner on all the time. The Diesel Burner is a high maintenance item, plus it uses diesel fuel from your tank. The electric elements should do an adequate job of supplying on demand hot water for average use. The electric heat element consumes 1,650 watts of power, which relates to 13.75 amps of shore power and puts out 5600btu's. Depending on the model I think they can supply as much as 10 gallons. Mine will. That is more than adequate for me to take a shower, wash some dishes, etc. If the DB is on then it will kick in pretty quickly, but it is unnecessary. When my wife takes a shower and washes her hair she flips the DB on. Likewise for the washing machine. This ensures she has unlimited hot water and then we turn it off again afterwards. The electric elements take a couple hours to fully heat the water from cold, so if we're in a hurry we flip on both electric elements and the DB which only takes a few minutes to heat the water, then kill the DB again. You need to have the DB serviced periodically once or even twice a year depending on usage... which is why we use it only as needed. It's a couple hundred bucks to have it serviced and not something most owners will try themselves. Normal service involves replacing the nozzle, cleaning the chamber, replacing the filter, etc. It is a very expensive unit and ignoring regular service will result in failure and expensive repairs. For service you should ONLY use a certified Tech from the list on the website, Service Locations

Not wanting to stink out the neighbors at RV parks and at CC rallys the only time we use the hydro hot is for baths, extended washing and when the temps drop below 38 degrees. Even with exhaust pipe extenders that take the fumes for the genset and the hydro hot above the roof line, its still a smelly offending piece. If you have the later unit with the aqua hot name, that is much lower in pollution and smell out put; with the service people not being required to have sniffers to set the correct air mixture for proper lean combustion, Aqua hots are one of my least favorite things about RVing. I'm really surprised California hasn't band them, because of the pollution they generate. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Hydro-hots don't have a real storage tank like the larger & later Aqua hots. maybe a gallon and a half, so the the electric heating element is only good for small clean-ups, maybe a shave, and the breakfast dishes. The larger Aqua-hot units in Newells and later Affinities and Magnas with two heating elements and a large storage tank can pretty much supply all the hot water you would ever need. That said when the wind is blowing, with the slides out and the floor heat running at colder temps, the hydro hot will keep a coach toasty warm when other systems are very marginal in other coaches. We were in Durango for Christmas one year and with it getting down to below O degrees every night we were very comfortable, while others were complaining. The only time the unit is challenged is when the wind is blowing, then we pull in the front slides at night. to reduce the volume and install our aluminum insulation in the front windshield and in the over the bed window.

By the way when having your units serviced make sure the burning chamber lining is clean and inspected, I'm on my 4th liner. The first one failed with in a year because of a manufacturing defect. The next two just because of normal wear and tear. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Crane,

You didn't post your coach model and year (and coach number). These would have been helpful to get you the precise correct advice. As you can see, you got a myriad of answers from different coach models.
