Travel Suggestions Please?

Yahoo Message Number: 104731
Greetings All,

My wife Terri and I are planning to take our first long trip this May in our 2006, 40' CC Inspire w/ 2015 Ford Edge toad. Our route will take us from Phoenix, AZ. to Laughlin, NV then on to Glendale, UT. to visit the Nat. Parks in that area. Our idea is to head up to Washington then back to Phoenix. We are planning to be gone about 6 weeks.
We would love to hear any suggestions on things that are a "Must See" , "Most Scenic Roads", "Favorite RV parks & Campgrounds" and most importantly "Roads and Places to Avoid".
We look forward to hearing your suggestions and experiences and hopefully meet some of you on the road.

We love Oregon, Especially Portland, if you like the shopping opportunities of a big city with a smaller town feel. They have great camera stores, Hifi shops, needle works shops. Roadmaster is in the area if you need hitch work. Pendleton seconds shop is across the river east of Vancouver. There's a great RV park near Troutdale. Mt Hood and MT Helens are in the area and the Columbia river and all the water falls are worth investigation. To the west at the Mouth of the River is Astoria. With great fishing, restaurants and the Pacific Ocean to visit. Some folks like to visit Tillamook with the Chesse and Ice Cream factory and the Airplane museum and great sea food. You should come down to Eugene and visit BOB Lee's Oregon Motor Coach Service center, stop in at BOB Dickman's Les Schwab tire shop. . See Gary at Premiere Coach Center. Stop by and visit the Now Winnebego Country Coach facility, all at the Home of CC, Junction City, Oregon. The best Cummins center is inCoburg, as is Coach Glass if you have any window issues. BOB Vinson has his own shop, too. Northwest RV Supply just south of Eugene is a great place to visit if you are looking for a particular part. Florence Oregon, Newport, Brookings, and other coast cities are fun to visit when the weather is warmer in July, August and September. Sisters is a fun place if you are into quilting or needle work. Bend is a fun area if you are a golfer. There are wineries and orchards to visit in season. Old covered bridges, and greet restaurants can be found all across the western part of the state. If you like big trees and green there is plenty of that, too. Crater lake ought to be visited, too. There is great fishing everywhere it seems in season. Coos-bay deserves a visit and exploration. Bandon has a great Wildlife sanctuary where you can see big cats and play with with young kittens, bears, deer and all sorts of other wild life'. Skunks are fixed and come in many colors from chocolate to blonde. The ferrets are a real treat as our the other critters. Again the sea food is fantastic. There are historic spots all over the state that might peak your curiosity. We like to make big purchases in Oregon because there is no sales tax. Tires, Cameras, Clothing, RV, accessories etc can be had at the same prices anywhere else with out the sales tax. There are new and used RV's available all along I-5 if you feel the need to upgrade. You'll have a chance to learn all about the hidden quirks of your coach in the Junction city area. There are great upholstery shops, people who rebuild awnings, and folks available that built your coach. The gents who supervised the building of your coach work For Coach Glass in Cohburg, but maybe back in Phoenix if the new shop is open. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731.

And let's add Powell's Books in Portland, a square block multistoried used and new book place that rivals any place else in the country.

And then the terrific jet boat trip and up the Rogue River. It is right at the south end of bridge on Hiway 1 at the mouth of the river. . It is an exciting and laughter loaded few hours you will never forget. Hint: Sit in the far back seats leaning against the steering tower. It has the best view, and is a little drier.

I will second Tom's comments, however, if time allows the trip from Astoria south on 101 will give you magnificent coastal scenery. The Oregon Coast is very rugged and beautiful. There is a fine aquarium in Newport. Old Town Florence is a fun stop for walking and shopping. In the Coos Bay area you have to leave 101 and head west to the Pacific Coast. Shore Acres Park has magnificent gardens. Sunset Bay Beach is a fun place and for sheer wild ocean, a walk along Bastendorf Beach can't be beat.

I forgot to add. If you are interested in meeting and socializing with other coach owners, Country Coach Friends is having their Homecoming Rally in North Bend (just north of Coos Bay) August 21 through August 26. Contact information is on their web site.

The beaches of Oregon are much nicer than the beaches of California on a warm sunny day. Don't for get to stop at a free weigh station on the week end and split weigh your coach to make sure you are airing your tires properly. If you like gaming and a nice place to stay, there is the Casino in Coosbay and Twin Feathers on I-5, among others. Most of the coast cities have some very interesting shops to visit. You'll have to discover Marion Berry Jams at Misty Meadows in Bandon, and most of the towns have hidden quilt and creative shops. There must be boat shops on every major River emptying into the Pacific, too. For RR fans there is the new Display and maintenance museum in Portland where SP 4449 and other Steam and diesel engines live. They have a great souvenir shop with a selection of RR books. There is a tourist RR that lets you see MT Hood in all its glory and another that travels the coast. I have always wanted to ride the commuter train from Eugene to Portland that use to wake us every morning while staying a CC for repairs. The Coast Starlight is the best train I have ever ridden on Amtrak rails. There is a great steam museum in Albany that has all sorts of tractors, logging equipment, and they are fired up on special weekends. Aerial views can be fun at different locations via balloon, bi-plane and Helicopter. There is a great air and space museum in Mc Minnville. And then their are wineries, wineries, and more wineries. If you have any Hitch issues , there is Hitch go pro near Walmart on the WEST SIDE of Eugene. I forgot to mention Carrier and sons for coach repairs, they are a couple of blocks from Oregon Motor Coach Service center on the road to the Airport. I f your a flat lander adventuring in Oregon will make you a well rounded driver if you get off I-5. I would recommend A GPS, as the roads in Oregon aren't marked that well. If you ask the natives for directions they give you a puzzled look and ask" You don't know where you are going?" I think I mentioned fishing, but let me emphasize, during season, finding a RV slot can be a real challenge. And though a lot of the fun of RVing is spontaneous adventuring, you had better have reservations, when near or on the coast. And then there are the trees. You wouldn't think fall colors could compare with the NE, or the Aspen in Colorado, but having bursts of color against a wall of evergreens in quite spectacular in the fall. I come from wine country in California and owned my own 300+ ft tall redwoods, so I know what a tree is and though not Dawn redwoods, trees in Oregon along with the high mountains a very easy on the eyes. If you decide to move to the Northwest. You want to buy on the North side of the Columbia river, no income tax, and shop on the south side of the river, no sales tax. The further east you go along the river the drier the climate, but colder in the winter time. Oregon is a great place to visit, but I'm a desert rat, and have to return to the southwest for the winter! TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731
