When to Raise tag axle?

We are new owners of a Country Coach and have driven it about 2,000 miles so far. Can anyone give me some advice on when to raise the tag axle? This is a great forum for now owners to learn from those of you that have been doing this a long time.

Any time you have to turn the steering when more that 180 to 270 degrees, would be my thoughts unless you are driving on gravel at very slow slow speeds. Another way to look at would be any time you have to make a turn greater than 30 degrees where you have to slow below 25 mph. Then you might as well slow down to where you reach 1st gear and the tag will lift. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Thomas: So you leave the tag switch "On" all the time? I have a tag also - and driving a tag is new to me. I knew about raising the tag when making tight turns at low speeds but I forget about it most of the time.

No because every time you come to a stop you would be lifting the tag, and that isn't what you want if you are breaking hard in an emergency. I f the road is fairly flat and winding with sharp turns or if I'm making a lot of turns in a parking lot . rv park or on smaller city street I leave the switch on. But if I'm am driving steep descending roads I leave the switch off. If I am driving steep inclines with sharp turns I leave the switch on. On Intestates I normally leave the switch off. If I drive from Durango to Ouray through Silverton Colorado, its switch on going up hill, switch off going down hill, switch on off the flat and level. My Toyo 12 R showed some edge wear after 5 years, the Michelin XZ2 showed none after 3 1/2 years, the Continentals some moderate wear after 4 years. And is why I had the tires rotated last year. It will be interesting to see how the new XZA2 on the front wear. TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

When tag is raise doesn't it also lock the break on the tag wheels? I ask because when I raise tag to pull into my drive it seems to leave skid marks.

With 20 plus years in the trucking industry, forget about lifting the tag. Leave it down and do what you have to do. Lifting the tag is a waste of time.

But if you want to do different have at it.

That is because it does not raise to clear the ground. If it does it takes 3 plus minutes to do it. Leve it down and enjoy life.

I agree, do not touch that switch unless your stuck one never ground. There are more important things to have your attention when driving

One of those threads where all the advise seems to be correct, as I was nodding my head as I read all of the input - including forgetting about the tag too:)!

Me? I'm in the camp that raises the tag in tight turning situations, forward and backwards. Like in campground or parking lot maneuvering.

If this in dirt or gravel, I usually forget about it, and let the tag scrub along as it is not adding strain, or wearing tires.

Another good thing to remember, is that sometimes when the drive wheels are having trouble getting traction, say soft wet grass, or even loose dirt or snow, that rising the tag will put more weight on the drives, and that can make a difference on getting traction. (And sometimes, also can allow you to dig in really deep, and stuck real good too...) I've had a few times on dirt roads while boon docking, that I've raised the tag in some softer power sand on a dirt road, and obtained traction with the drive...
