Engine quits

I have a 2006 Intrigue with 525 CAT. Occasionally it will die while sitting and idling. Then I have to remove the air filter and squirt starting fluid while my wife starts it. I have been able to start it this way so far. I have replaced the secondary fuel filter. It started doing this the day after I had the valve lash performed but don't know if it is related. It will sometimes go for weeks between problems. It happened once while just waiting for it to warm up before leaving the park and then it happened while I was leaving the park this morning. The first time it happened it wouldn't start at all. I had noticed the afternoon before that while we were checking in it seemed to falter a little but I was able to park and never gave it a second thought until the next morning when it just cranked over but wouldn't start. I had a mobil truck repair come out and they used the starting fluid method. Does anyone have any ideas?

Dennis,

I hate to say this but using "starting fluid" is a dumb thing to to. Modern coaches have a heater grid in the air intake system and by using this fluid, you risk having a fire so don't do it.

There is obviously something wrong and you need to have the coach looked at by a CAT service center, not a mobile tech that squirts stuff in your air intake.

Fuel filters and hoses connecting filters to the lift pump and injection pump. Then the injection pump itself. Is the filter bowl clean? TWI 204 Intrigue 11731

Sounds like the valve clearance was set incorrectly. Symptoms resemble incorrect settings.

Starting fluid I'd meant as troubleshooting tool not a fix.

One to check is air leaks in the fuel line and filters. This would allow the fuel to drain back while parked. Speaking of when the problem happens how long has generally been parked? When the ignition is on does the fuel bowl on the separator stay full?

What kind of codes does it throw on a diagnostic code reader? That will tell you where to start looking for the problem. I think you need a tech with such a diagnostic reader to look at it, or buy one yourself and have a look. Let us know what you find.

I've been told and read "you NEVER use starter fluid on a diesel vehicle !!!!!! Has to do with the glow plugs or preheat system !!!!!!! Sounds like you may be having a problem with fuel delivery. When was your last fuel filter change. Could also be bacteria in the filters.

I had a similar problem with my 2005 Allure. After a lot of checking things at Cat dealer turned out it was a bad ignition switch. Got one from NAPA and problem solved. Dave2005 Allure #31284 From:

I would put my two cents in, the cats have had issues forever with the manuel fuel lift/ primer pump resulting in the same symptoms. But agree, only use starter fluid in a emergency it's bad for that engine and can lead to bigger problems, get a good cat place to look it over...

Don't think it's related to valve adjustment. I would replace both filters and check for fuel leaks. If fuel is leaking you might be pulling air into the system.

Dennis I had the same problem. I have a Cat regen engine and it would die at idle when in the regen mode. Took it Cat and they replaced the idle fuel regulator and in solved the problem.

I took the coach into Cheyenne Equipment, a Cat dealer and they checked the codes which there were none and checked the fuel pressure and it was good and held the pressure for a long time. He was baffled and then reached up to move some fuel lines around and bumped a battery cable and all of a sudden the engine started running rough and belching black smoke and he wiggled the cable and it then smoothed out and ran good. Upon inspection of the battery cables they were very dirty and one connection was loose. He cleaned up the cables and batteries and put on a couple of heavy duty clamps. It has been working ok since so will keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for everyone's input.

You were lucky, good find. Did you have trouble cranking the engine with the dirty loose cables? I am surprised it even started with loose battery cable terminals.

I didn't have any trouble cranking the engine. It wasn't one of the main battery cables thas was the culprit, it was a 6 or 8 guage wire that connected to the negative battery terminal and this wire went in to a "loom" of wires off to the right of the batteries. This wire would vibrate loose from the battery and then arc or weld it self back so it made a connection and then the next time after vibrating it self loose it would do the same thing.again. I don't understand how most things work on a vehicle and that's the best I can explain it.

Yes, cleaning the batteries and checking the connections will be on my list to do every six months or so. I know better. I guess I was relying on the people who change the oil thinking that was part of the service.

Well, it's not over yet. Went to start the engine on Sunday morning and it wouldn't start. We went to the NAPA store to see if they had fuel filters and they did and then asked them if they knew who in the area could help us. They gave us names and I could only get a hold of one of them and he could come help us this morning (Monday). We went ahead and changed both fuel filters and it ran for a little bit and died and wouldn't start. This all happened in Winnimucca, Nevada. The repairman came out and bled the lines and messed with the check valves and we started it up and it ran for awhile. We shut it off and waited about 10 minutes and it started without any trouble. We drive a couple hundred miles and stop for fuel in Sparks, NV and it starts running rough while I'm looking for a spot in the parking lot to stop and have lunch. I did keep it running and there is a CAT dealer here and I am staying on their lot until tomorrow morning to see if they can pinpoint the problem.

I ended up having to replace the fuel hose from the tank to the filters and replaced the hose from the filters to the lift pump. They put a sight hose in the line and you could see the air in the fuel. After replacing the hose there were no bubbles. Hopefully, I have it resolved. I've driven about 500 miles with no problems. I appreciate your help and possible solutions. I had it done at Cashman Cat in Sparks/Reno, NV. I thought it curious that regular hourly rate was $118 but for RVs it was $145. I asked why and they said because they are much harder to work on. I guess I figured an hour was an hour no matter what you were working on. Maybe they just try to discourage people from taking their RV in to them to work on them. They said I think you will find that a lot of CAT dealers are charging more for RVs. I don't know if that was true. The service was very good. They let me watch what they were doing and explained everything as they troubleshooted it. They just rerouted the new hose from tank to filters rather than try to remove the old one.

I recently had my coach towed to Mustang Cat in El Campo Texas. (Blown coolant hose) Labor rates were identical to what Dennis stated. The people at Mustang Cat were very courteous and professional""not cheap though!

The tow was another story. At one point the tow truck dragged my front tires on the pavement putting flat spots on both. Once at Mustang Cat, we also noticed the boom on the tow truck had damaged the front cowl. All done & told, about $3,000 worth of damage. Working with Coach Net to get this resolved.

I am glad you found the problem. I wouldn't worry about paying a little extra for them to work on your coach. Some truck chassis shops won't touch them for any price. I was in Delhart Texas with a coolant hose problem and Rush Truck Center there wouldn't help me. They said they would not work on motorhomes. Suggested I have it towed to Amarillo, which would have been about a 2 hour drive! Jeeeeezzzz... They just sold me the coolant, and I had to repair it myself. It wasn't that difficult, and I'm glad I did it because now I know it is done right.
