EGT manual shifting

Yahoo Message Number: 107520
I want to comment on exhaust gas temperature (EGT).
The most valuable gauge on my instrument panel is my EGT gauge. I have found when pulling a grade if you wait for the transmission to shift down the exhaust gas temperature will be in the high numbers 12 to 1300 Fahrenheit. I believe this is what has caused many exhaust manifolds to crack. CC did not install EGT gauge on there early units.

I religiously monitor my EGT and I keep it in the green. Therefore as EGT starts to rise (starting up a grade) most of the time I will downshift manually to fourth or fifth gear.

It's all about RPM. If the RPM decreases The volume of exhaust gas decreases causing higher temperatures. Therefore I pulled the grade keeping my EGT in the Green and the engines is happy because the RPM is kicked up; on the front side of the power curve

I'm running an 8.3 Cummins diesel.
