How can I weld on the coach

I have to have a bracket welded back onto the frame under the transmission. What precautions would you suggest before I let the welder strike an arc? I assume that the batteries will need to be disconnected or will turning the disconnect switches suffice. I am worried about all the sensitive electronics onboard.
Everyone's thoughts would be appreciated.

By all means disconnect ALL battery terminal cables to protect your electronics before any welding operations !!!

our generator was framed in under the coach with no way to drop it for service. When we had to have work done they had to cut the brackets. They wanted to weld it back. Lonny told them to make L-Brackets and bolt it back rather than welding. The advantage of that is that now if we have to have it serviced or (knock on wood) replaced it will be easier. I too would be worried about welding.

On my 03 Intrigue, there is a yellow label in the battery compartment that tells you what to do prior to doing any welding on the chassis. 1. Disconnect the wiring harness at the transmission; 2. Disconnect both positive and negative battery cables; 3. Protect any electrical cables from the welding; 4. Do not connect the negative welding connector to any electrical or electronic components.

Thanks, all good points. I completed the welding yesterday, np problems. I did all the things that you suggested, but I didn't think of the transmission. I'm leaving this morning, we'll see if she goes into gear!

I've been taught and I've read in Timkin's bearing failure analysis reports that arc welding can possibly cause pitting of the bearing surfaces whether the ground is "properly placed" close to the work or not. In the text by Timken, they report that it seems to be less likely with a good ground in close proximity to the work. This pitting can lead to premature bearing failure, how soon is hard to estimate, maybe not before some other component fails due to wear and tear.

There seems to be many potential risks associated with arc welding on an RV from electrical components being damaged to bearings being damaged. This scares me, I had them bolt the Hydralift motorcycle carrier to the back of our Magna. There may be another situation where arc welding is the only solution, just seems to me like a good thing to avoid if possible...

I think I'd rather hear "It probably will never happen to you, but just in case it does, here's what you should do!" Rather than "It's not a matter of IF its going to happen, it's a matter of WHEN it will happen! Hahaha
