Shore Cord

We've battled the retraction of shore cord for a few years and now unable to retract it all the way. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do about it? Were you able to install a new one and get it to retract correctly?

Ultimately we had to install a whole new cord and reel when the original was out 30ft and wouldn't retract at all. New one works okay but I am now "snake bit" about it ever happening again. Good luck.

Isn't there a tension adjustment on the rollers that pull the cord into the storage tub? Look closely at the rollers and mechanism I thing there are two adjustment knobs. What kind of reel is it?

"I have been noting with interest the various comments on the subject of power cords not retracting properly so I thought it time to chime in. My Glendening device (barrel type) began driving me nuts by not retracting properly, if at all . Somewhere I heard that Glendening had a rebuild kit so I ordered it. The rollers were larger and upon examination of the original ones I found that the axle through the rollers had elongated the hole in the rollers thus causing inadequate pressure on the cord. Even the spring adjustment was not adequate to overcome the lack of pressure. Upon replacing all of the rollers with the newer, larger diameter ones everything works great and has been for over a year. Life is wonderful.

Ours has started going in slowly. Lonny holds the cord and "helps" it retract. I think the gears in ours will need to be replaced soon.

Ours is in the bedroom closet, driver's side inside a box that is also carpeted.

My winder's gear shattered in cold weather the manufacture was very helpful and sent me a new set of gears there is a tension adjustment on the winder

I have an 06 Intrigue. 12047 I had the same experience and was told to gain access To the reel by removing the wood box cover in the closet. My design has adjustable Cable shoes which need to be tightened with useage No need to replace the unit Bob

Try extending it all the way, let it sit in the sun to soften up, rewind it letting it turn as it retracts.

As stated, I would run the cable out all the way and let the sun warm it up then go one step farther. Get some good silicone spray and spray it good while it is good and warm. Some of these cables have a plastic jacket and it will get old and hard. The experience I've had with CC and I'm sure other manufactures do the same, with what they use to build these things, it is price first, quality last, especially on items that the regular lay person know little or nothing about. If you do need to replace your cord, go to an electrical supply house and get you a piece of 6/4 SO cord and a Four wire range card cap. The so will sty pliable through out its life span.I would get an extra cord cap because I doubt if you will find a rubberized cord cap and the plastic ones will break if treated unkindly. If you want, you can spend extra and get a marine grade plug. Depends on wheather you want to spend a hundred dollars or eight dollars!!

There are tension guide rollers which guide the cord into the storage tub. They probably need adjusting and/or cleaning. Go to the right side of your closet, remove clothes in the way, take out screws, if any, holding the cover in place . . .  mine just lifted off. See if everything is aligned, clean, etc. There is a plastic guide cone which may have moved out of position (it did in mine). Have an assistant try to run it in/out and observe how it goes. I'm not the expert on adjusting tension though. Guess you could carefully experiment.

Once you get it running properly, try these steps to help keep it working properly. Use a microfiber cloth to keep the cord clean/dry as you reel it in. Avoid twisting. Apply a SLIGHT PULL on the cord with the stamped print on the cord in sight as you coil it in.

The cord needs to twist as it goes in. The lay of the wire in the cable and the circular wind in the barrel makes it want to lay properly by winding itself as it goes in. Let it twist as it wants to going in. It makes the cable lay correctly in the barrel.

Had the same problem. Resolved by adjustment of tensioners in the take up reel. Access is through bedroom closet, hidden screws in the carpet surrounding the housing. I believe the unit is made by Glenndinning.
