Urgent: Need Tire Advice Class A Diesel

Yahoo Message Number: 108082
Today, Friday Sep 9, I had an incident and punctured a sidewall in Duluth MN. Currently I have Toyo 12R12.5 all around. These tires were installed in July 2010, so they have been in use for a little over 6 years. The tires were not fresh when I installed them: they ranged from 1.5 years to 0.5 years old when installed (I was screwed by the dealer). Since they are almost aged out I'm inclined to replace all 6, if I can find a suitable set. Therein lies the rub.

I called a local Class A RV dealer for a recommended tire vendor. The first could get nothing until at least Wednesday. The other could get me some Goodyear G661s in my size on Monday morning (mine is an uncommon size). The dealer said he had put this model on RVs in the past with no complaint. I looked up this model on the Goodyear site, and it is characterized as a truck tire rather than an RV tire.

So, it looks like my options are to buy one or a whole set of the GY G661 or stay here for up to a week if I choose a different model or size. I can't really do any more until Monday. We have been on the road for over two months and need to be home in NC in a week or so, so our time is not unlimited I will do some research over the weekend for other models.

In the meantime:
1. Does anyone have any experience with the GY G661.

2. I like my Toyos, but that may not be an option. Any other recommendation for a particular model?

Myron, we have had excellent experience with Bridgestones for 6 years. We had Goodyears before, same ones, and they didn't wear very well. The Goodyears were on them as a new coach when we purchased in April of 06, and after 4 years with the front ones worn out, we replaced with Bridgestones. After 6 years, plenty of tread left and didn't wear down, we replaced with the new version, the 265 series designed for a great ride and much quieter than the Bridgestones which we replaced in June. Bridgestone and Firestone are the same.

Wishing you good luck,

We had original Toyos and hated them. We switched to B F Goodrich ST230's Load range H and were very happy with them but they rode a bit stiff but not as stiff as the Toyos. Last year we bought Michelins. Much better ride. More expensive but worth it.
B F Goodrich was recommended by a tire guy in TX who worked on Country Coach and Prevost. B F Goodrich is owned by Michelin and the tires are made in the USA. Good ride for the price. We replaced them at 6.5 years. The tire guy we bought the Michelins from said we could probably get another year out of them as they were wearing great. We bought new tires because Lonny had heart surgery and we were headed out on our first long trip after his surgery and I didn't want any tire problems.

Myron.......I've been running Goodyear 12R G149 RSA's for 7 years now and have had no problems at all. They replaced the original Toyo's and have always run much smoother and quieter than the Toyos ever did.
Plan to replace tires in the spring............probably with the same.

There seems to be some favorable experience with the GY G661's over on http://irv2.com, with some good insight. We have the GY G291's in a 315R/22.5 size on the front of our coach and I like the way they handle and ride. When we bought the coach up in Canada it needed tires right away and so these were what seemed like a good choice of the few available options. Also, since we had used them on our fire engines quite a bit and they performed well for that application I felt OK with them.

Myron,

I have been running the Goodyear G661 since July, 2013. I have had no problem at all and the tires seem to wear well after 22,000 miles. I can't say much more than that.

Continental (like HSR) tires are good except for the front. Been on them 3 yrs no complaints.

What is wrong with the Continental tire being mounted on the front?

We recently changed from 12R's to 295/80's, so that we'd have other tire options to choose from. (8.25" rims, or I would have considered 315/80's too.)

The short of it? We went with the FMCA Michelin tire program, and bough Michelin XZA2 tires. If you want to save a few bucks, IMO, also use the FMCA program for BG Goodrich ST230's on the rear (Made by Michelin, so FMCA program works on them too.), with XZA2's on the steers.

I have gone from 8 XZE*'s 12R tires. A robust tire, with extra meat in the sidewalls. So I felt for our first set on our used to us 40' coach, it would allow some 'OOPS!' lessons of adjusting to the 40' vs 28' Bounder we had before:)! Lost two of the XZE*'s to pot holes in California. Tire shortage at the time from Michelin, so ended up with two ST230's. Put them on the Steers. An improvement in front end, where you notice it the most, ride comfort, and quieter too. When we went to the 295/80's, I put the still relatively new ST230's on our Tag. The XZA2's are another improvement in ride quality on the front end. Both in noise, and ride comfort.

And, if you want to save even more money. Many RV'ers with like coaches, gave me very positive feedback on Hankook's. AH11/AH12's depending the size you go with. Me? I'd still go with the XZA2's on the steers, but have zero question about putting Hankook's on the rear positions. (And by the way, many I know have them all around, and speak very highly of them in all positions.)

And to Don's posts - nothin wrong with the Continentals, a respected and well thought of tire. But, they are pricey:)!

And I have no feedback on the Goodyears for you.

Best,

Smitty

Not real sure, but when I bought them back about 3 or so years ago. No one was recommending them for the front (steers) of my coach. That might of changed, but when I replaced the fronts this year (FL area) with Michelin still no updates.
I have six Continentals on the back.
