Just returned from Calif. to PEI, New England, back to Calif.
Long trip. We crossed at Sarnia going over.
Most difficult part was the Quebec Province, which includes Montreal.
Be prepared all freeway and city signs in French.
Our gps hated us. Next time we'll cross from Maine.
Our route different than what you maybe doing.
But the route we took : 402 out of Sarnia. 401 to avoid Toronto traffic.
Stay on 401 until Montreal, then look for 40.
Cross St Lawrence river in Quebec and stay on 20 to Eastern Provinces.

You maybe skipping the Maritines and dropping down to Maine.
But we crossed back into the US in Calais. Then took 19 to 193 into Bar Harbor. Stayed at Smugglers Den CG in Bar Harbor.
Great trip.

9,000 miles in coach.
Happy trails, Kent

Whit, plug it into Google Map and it shows the fastest route and you will enter the USA at Cuborn Gore Point of Entry, Hy 27 Maine. All roads from there to Bar Harbor are fine to travel on.

Another option would be drop down from Montreal and enter the USA on Interstate 87. You will come to US HY2 after crossing the border and take it to Bangor and pick up the road to Bar Harbor there.

We spend many Summers in the Upstates of New England and have driven many of the roads here. Currently in Winter Harbor, ME. While a couple of hours longer, I prefer the HY2 route. You travel the foot of the Green and White Mountain ranges and this time of year will start to be beautiful.

Maine is a beautiful state and there is a lot more than Bar Harbor.

There are other options but some would require driving on some paved but rough roads and you may not enjoy them unless you are use to such roads.

Many of us on this Board spend time in this area so if any additional questions, just ask. All depends on how much time you have to spend and what you want to see.

Richard Aquino, I loved reading every word here. It's such terrific info. We're used to the areas around Lake Willoughby and Springfield and Burlington, VT, but that's about it, so reading all you wrote is great. We know very little about Maine, but do have friends who have a home on Deer Isle. Have you ever been able to camp anywhere near Deer Isle? And do you have suggestions as to other campgrounds you've found in Maine or elsewhere in the Upstates of New England? Thank you so much, Richard.

Mary, I decided to start a new post, at least I hope I did, and included your post.

Lake Willoughby is beautiful. I thought about suggesting that he consider a route that included those back roads but some people may not want to drive that type of road. One of the places we like it Newport, VT, just up the road.

I don't think there is anywhere to camp on Deer Isle but there is a new CG just down the road from the bridge to Deer Isle, You would need to call and verify but I think they can host larger RV's but not sure of 40 feet.

We have come to Maine at various times for thirty years and enjoy the whole place. Our preference for Downeast Maine is North of Bar Harbor/MDI and all the stops from there to the Eastport/Lubec area. From there you leave the Bay and head inland and North. You have two routes that you can use to get to Fort Kent at the top of Maine. Not many campground up there but we do enjoy the Eagle Lake, ME area. All that timberland and hills are beautiful and if someone is into large game hunting there is plenty of opportunity.

I am sure others know of some great places.

Mary we just returned from a wonderful stay in Damariscotta at Lake Pemaquid Campground. My 42ft and a friend's 45ft coach both made it through the camp's twisting roads without issue. Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is a must-see for incredible Maine coast scenery, and there are several day trips easily taken from the campground. Enjoy! Jeff and Peg Thurston
