Engine will not stop with ignition switch

Yahoo Message Number: 108458
Need help troubleshooting everyone.

Engine cranks and runs fine, but whenever I shut the switch off the engine continues to run. I have to unplug the fuel shutoff connector, at the fuel shutoff solenoid, to stop the engine.

Don't know if this could be part of the problem, but had the alternator rebuilt and had some welding done on the chassis (broken rear shock mount) before this problem started occurring. I did all the necessary disconnects before welding. List of disconnects....all battery cables removed, battery switches off (domestic & chassis), unplugged all wires from transmission, both VIM's disconnected, and unplugged the ECU under the driver side gear selection console.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like something happened to your shut down solenoid. This can be easily verified. Get some one to start the rv and go to the engine compartment and have them turn the switch off. See if you can manually move the solenoid to the shut it down position. This solenoid is on the top right side of the engine. Easy to change. For about 500 dollars if you buy from someone like Freightliner. If you are not in a big hurry, order from the internet and save some major bucks. Since this happened after doing your other work, I would remove it and bench test it before ordering another one. These things have been known to come a part right out of the blue but coincidences tend to make me very cautious!!

Check your ignition solenoid. It can 'hang on' and prevent the engine from shutting down. Doesn't your kill switch in the engine compartment work?

It was the shut down solenoid. It was binding and I was able to pull it down while engine was running and ignition switch off. I replaced it.
Thanks for the replies everyone, but my engine stop push button will not stop the engine. Does anyone know what could cause that. I have tested switch and relay and they tested good. I may have relay wired wrong, not sure.

Roy:On the non electronic engines prior to 2000,the engine compartment switch will keep your engine from starting, but it won't keep it from running. Just feel blwssed that you have this engine. The 8.3 teamed up with the 6 speed Allison is the most bullet proof combo you can own, altho in the case of a shutdown solenoid failure it will sure give you a start when nothing you try will shut the thing down.
