Dometic Freezer Door Seal

Our 02 Intrigue has a Dometic RM1272 Elite side-by-side refrigerator. Works great but ... We've had a problem for years with ice buildup in the freezer requiring frequent defrosting. The giveaway that it is the seal is that there is a large glob of ice that forms just inside the freezer along the center of the top of the door. Years ago I inquired about replacing the seal and was told that I couldn't do that and would have to replace the entire door. That seemed extreme. Anyone have similar experience or anyone managed to replace the seal and if so, how and what?? Thanks, Steve

In May 2010, I replaced the door seal on our Dometic NDR 1492 (cost $215.00 plus shipping). It was a tedious job, and I was very careful to be sure it was installed properly. The doors must be removed to install the new seals.

Since then, as before, we still experience excessive ice buildup at the top of the freezer section on the interior part. As you said in your post, this makes for very frequent defrosting. As I understand it, your buildup was on the freezer door whereas ours in on the interior top at the front.

If you are able to purchase a replacement seal (check with Kevin Waite) and install it I will be anxious to hear if that solves your problem.

Thanks for the replies about my freezer door seal. I did look up the part online and also saw a YouTube video of the process for replacing the seal which looks fairly tedious and time consuming. I recall trying to remove the door once before in order to replace some rusty hinge supports but ran into problems trying to remove the door (Dometic RM 1272 Elite side-by-side). It doesn't look like I can buy just the freezer door gasket. Since we are full-timers, I think I will try to live with the periodic defrosting necessary to remove the ice lump that forms inside the top of the freezer until at least the middle of next year when I will have access to a refrigerator/freezer where I can put everything while I am working on the one in the motorhome.

Hi Steve,

We have the same frosting issue with our RM 1272 in our '01 Intrigue #11238. i took some 1/2" wide foam tape and placed it in the space created when you fold the gasket back. This helped a little, but it will still frost up in the same location you describe. I also resealed the seam where the metal top of the freezer and the plastic come together. It did not make enough diference to bother with, and is nearly impossible unless you let the unit warm to room temperature.

I have actually considered adding another layer of foam tape, as my freezer door will push in slightly after it is latched. Might help.

I checked the WHITE GFCI at the top of the lower panel. I only have one, I can see on your photo that you have two. The lower GFCIs on the lower 120VAC Sub Panel (the feed coming from the Inverter) are for the PS and DS outlets. I hit the test/reset on the white GFCI and it clicked off and reset. I'll try to put a Voltmeter on it today to see if there's power coming out of it.

Jim, I have a heated floor but mine is not controlled by a "thermostat" mine is controlled by a " rheostat" thru the silverleaf panel, are you familiar with this configuration? Darrell

This is Marsha, Darrell's wife. I'm going to clarify something he said and report the exact verbiage from our repair.

Our heated floor is controlled entirely by the sliver leaf panel, with settings from 0 to 10. we don't have a thermostat. We have two independent sections, front and back.

We had problems that were repaired by Premier Motor Coach in Tucson. Here is what the repair order says: "upon inspection it was found that the gfci breakers (2) above breaker box were both tripped even though they did not appear to be tripped. solution: reset both breakers with flathead screwdriver"

It seems that there are several configurations to control the floor. this describes ours
