Steering Column Smoke and electrical smell

We were backing into the driveway and smoke came from the steering column with an electrical smell. Probably wire but where to start?? We did turn the steering wheel sharply to the left to back in. At least it happened when we were stopping for awhile.

Anything showing itself as a cause so far? Could it be something in the Smart Wheel?
