2000 Magna Charge Air Cooler Replacement

I'm going to replace the CAC on my 2000 Magna #5734 and I have found replacement units both at Country Coach and at a place called Radiator Supply House. They cost between $2,500 and $2,700.00. Depending on which place you talk to. Does anybody have any experience getting a new CAC for less money than that? It seems awfully high for a part that would cost $500.00 for a Peterbuilt or Kenworth semi tractor.

mine went out in canada. as it turned out most of them are made in canada. paid 1500.00 us for a new one up there. google that kind of stuff buy direct.

Well for those of you considering CAC replacement, I can give you some additional details. The factory says the only way to remove it and/or the radiator, is to drop it out the bottom which means you need to have the coach up in the air. Instead of that i removed the grill and cut out the lower frame member. It's just 2" square tubing and quite easy to remove. Then the CAC comes right out the side. I'll weld the tubing back in place after installing the new CAC. It's big and heavy about 32" tall including the oil cooler and about 64" wide.

Well. The project is complete and the test drives were successful. It makes about 27 psi of boost at 55 mph and 75% throttle. We're heading from Minnesota to Texas next weekend pulling the car trailer so that should be a good test.

That boost sounds really good. I called CAT and got the results from the dyno test when my C-10 was built. It generated 26.6 psi boost when it was tested in 2000.

Very interesting. Leaving on a 3500 mile trip tomorrow pulling a car on the trailer. Should be interesting to see the difference. We towed before with only 9 lbs of boost so looking forward to this trip.

Here is what the CAT Dealer in my town has to say about boost devices....FYI....

David,

It looks like this device connects to and alters the boost sensor and fuel pressure sensor information going to the ECM. The ECM uses the altered sensor information to make boost and fuel pressure changes, thus changing HP and fuel usage. This is considered an unauthorized modification by Caterpillar. They require dealers to report these types of modifications when they see them in their shops.
I doubt this company has done any engineering/testing on the modified engines to determine whether the modification has the potential to cause engine damage or engine longevity issues.
Also, I'm not sure what effect the modification would have on emissions. I would highly advise against installing any engine modification device.

Forgive me.....

I have another question to ask.

But, I cannot seem to learn how to start a new topic.
I am having the 3M taken off the nose of my coach and I want to hear recommendations about whether or not a Bra(Mask) is a good idea or not. Lazy Days will custom make on for me for $699. They say it is much easier to clean off the bugs from the front and will also protect against gravels.
Opinions, please.....

Pete we drove from Minnesota to Texas pulling a Mountaineer on a trailer and never even knew we had anything behind us. This new CAC apparently is constructed differently from the OEM and it actually flows more air so that might explain why we got the high boost readings. The VMSpc program regularly reported 393 HP too. Very impressed with the performance of this engine/chassis combination. It finally drives like I expected it to when I bought it a year ago.
