Newbies next question

HI gang.

My next question in my seemingly endless acquisition of knowledge in the RV world is about seatbelts. Do the passengers have to be seatbelted in the back? Is it a state by state law depending on where you are? Does everyone use the seatbelts? I guess the table with the chairs is out of the question to sit in while driving?? The back bed too?? I am curious what everyone else does.

I am not sure what the law is in different states but I for one would not take more pepole in my coach than I had seat belts for. We had an extra seat belt installed on our coach so that we have seat belts for 4. Flying around in a coach during a sudden stop or accident could hurt.

If the factory did not put seat belts in that spot then you should assume that they are not for use during travel. Normally, the driver and passenger seat and the couches are equipped with seat belts.

You need a, properly installed, seat belt for each passenger that will be riding in the coach regardless of their location.

The laws vary state to state. At one time manufacturers were only required to provide belts for driver and passenger. May have changed.

Another issue is loose furniture in the coach. In my coach the recliner and dinette chairs would go flying in an accident, and issue just as dangerous as an unbelted passenger.

I have not done anything about it because securing those items would require significant modifications. I have always wanted to keep my coach as original as possible.

Would be interested to hear how others have viewed this issue.

Some years ago I took out a new Magna 630 limited addition for a test drive. The salesman new me from all the Home coming rallies we had attended. While driving this 45' coach with 600 HP on a local two lane deserted highway I decided to check out the brakes. We had performed a walk around and checked the interior before we left. Well at 45 mph I slammed on the brakes. An unobserved legal pad came from some where and slammed into the back of my pilots seat leaving a rather nasty looking scar. The salesman apologized. I went out side and as it was a misty day and the road was damp there was steam coming off the tires. I was really surprised by the short distance we had traveled from the sign as I had used as a mark for applying the brakes. It was maybe just half again past the length of the coach. So I agree keep things tied down when you travel. We place our living room table under the dinette table and make sure all cabinet doors, refrigerator doors, etc are secure. As we had our kitchen counter drawers extended in depth and are very loaded we had keyed travel locks installed. Making sharp turns at high way speeds isn't an issue, its when you hit a bump on the road at the same time or if the road profile is away from the curve and not into it. With practice you will learn to feel when you are reaching an uncomfortable feeling while making turns with the coaching leaning away from focus point of the curve.

Hint: with the tag axle switch engaged slow down and allow the coach to shift into first gear so the tag will lift to prevent scrubbing your valuable tires prematurely when making sharp turns.
