Fuel transferl pump

Yahoo Message Number: 110195
Hi Guys, new to forum and just purchased 02 allure, coach is on Florida I,m from Wisconsin . Coach is in Storage . I test drove and inspected myself on 2 different times. I did notice a couple of drips that I determined is fuel from transfer pump after start up and stops after maybe about 20 drops. Engine runs great no signs of fuel starvation. I think I can replace this myself once I get it back home. My question , has anyone had this problem and can I drive it back home or does this get worse over time. 350 ISC with 39,000 miles Thanks to all for info that has been shared on this forum.

Welcome Bob,

I have had that same problem on my ISL 370. My pump did the same thing but it was sucking in air after it quit dripping. You probably can get back home but you need to get it replaced before it does damage to your main pump.

Bob,

The lift pump has 3 bolts that can be tightened from under the bed. it requires a long extension to get down to it. the pump will need to be replaced as replacement gaskets are no longer available.

Thanks for info, can you just replace just the pump or do you need pump with the bracket and remove all hoses. Bob

Bob you also should check all of the rubber fuel lines as the ones country coach used were of poor quality. They crack and need to be replaced with marine grade hoses. Check the generator line, and if you have oil heat check that line too. I had to replace all of mine and now every thing works fine.

Not sure on the pump as Cummings replaced mine.

Bob, I know you could do this job and save a lot of money. Since the lift pump is a critical component I don't think I would risk a long trip from Florida to Wisconsin. If the pump fails on the trip you would then likely have a big towing bill as well as few choices of a repair shop. Replacing the lift pump is a very difficult job due to having to reach deep into the engine compartment to reach it, and then it is still tight quarters at the pump location. My vote is for going ahead and having the pump replaced before you start out.

Thanks George I was going to get your opinion , I'm thinking of that also, looks like gasket between pump and bracket. I have ordered gaskets. I wish I would have took serial number off engine might also get a new transfer pump but I don't want to undo all the hoses. Did you have the same problem. Bob

Couldnt agree more . Bus would go 55 on the flat but severely bucked going over overpasses. No way in Colorado or hilly country. Had to wait 1 week Cummins Summerville.

I'm at the Cummins shop in Orlando with the same problem. After diagnosing a fuel restriction and thinking fuel lift pump, they put gauges on my fuel filters. Replaced both and I'm back on the road. The most expensive filter change I have ever had. $780.00 ! I had them replaced last April and 15K miles later sitting al winter in Key West they must have clogged up.

I learned the hard way to always add a biocide to the fuel for any storage period. Today's ultra low sulfur biodiesel fuels seem to attract water deposits in the bottom of the fuel tank where algae can grow and plug things up. Stabilizers aren't enough. Good luck and safe travels.

Jeff, what type of biocide are you using? And what is considered a long enough storage period to use it?

I prefer BIOBOR JF Fuel Microbiocide brand for my tank. Any storage over 2 weeks in weather above freezing can easily start algae growth, so I just treat every fill-up. 16oz treats 1280 gallons, and it's around  $20.

I also prefer the addition of Star-tron Diesel Additive for storage of a month or more, or if the weather is extremely warm. Hope this helps.

Jeff

Thanks to all for info, If I only would have taken down engine serial number before I left I could have returned with new pump. I did find someone with the 4928511 gaskets and have 2 on order.

Thanks Jeff. I ordered the 2 products. I do have some experience with the Star Tron additive. It is a very good product. I appreciate the feedback.
