Engine overheating

I have a 2003 intrigue with Cummins 400 engine.
I have been having a over heating problem for the last three years.
It seem to Happen mostly on long extended grades. I hear it down to the lowest gears not to no avail.

I had in the Cummins shop and they used a dumpster to try to simulate the prob!em, also tested the radiator. $1500.

Last year I had the fan controller replaced. $1700. No luck.

I have been told that cutting wants in the engine compartment door will help! I have run out of ideas. Any help will be appreciated.

Stupid question I know but have you had the thermostat replaced?

Can you hear the cooling fan go to high when this happens? It should also go on high when the Jake Brake is being used.

Just some thoughts.

We had wire run from fans to a toggle switch nears allison panel so driver can control. Done by Oregon Motor Coach. Also if you turn the defroster or AC on max that will call for the fans to come on sooner.

Not stupid will check invoices to see about thermostat. Will also. Take ac suggestion.

Had the same problem for two years in our CAT powered Inspire. Tried just about everything including a wax valve. Nothing worked. One of Eric Olmstead's folks crawled up to the coolant input to the engine and looked down the channel. Whoever replaced the last thermostat (a shop in Phoenix) left a piece of the old one in the water channel blocking coolant. Was a b*^#@ to pull out the pieces, but once he did, bingo been perfect ever since. Know it's a long shot, but keep it in mind.

If you've replaced the thermostat and had the radiator checked, I would try this. Next trip, go to your fuse box and pull the fuse for the fan controller. This will default the fan to high speed. Now see if you get an overheating condition. If the problem goes away, I'd install the wax valve conversion by Source.

If you still have the problem, I'd check the fan motor and make sure I can run at high speed.

How can you tell your overheating, gauges? Could be a bad gauge or sensor. Or are you reading off of Silverleaf?

How did they check your radiator? Could be a bad radiator.

Could be a bad head gasket. Have you been loosing coolant?

Has the engine shut down due to high temperature?

I replaced the fan controller with the Source wax valve. I failed to mention that when I said I replaced fan controller. I'll try what you suggested.

The gauges and silverleaf show overheating. As far as I know I am not loosing coolant. If I pull the fuse and the fan goes to a high speed would it make any difference if I left it out.

Ok, I didn't know you replaced the SD fan controller. Pulling the fuse won't do anything since the fan controller is no longer being used. The fan is now controlled by the thermo wax valve. How old is the Source wax valve? I would call Source and explain your problem. I think it's Scott who developed this system. I've read of problems with the wax valve causing overheating. The wax valve was used as standard equipment on some Monaco's and Alpine RVs. You have to bypass the wax valve with a union to run the fan on high. Let me find the thread at irv2 that explains this problem. If it's a bad valve, Source might warrant it.

Sorry my reply didn't go through, so I'll try again. If you have the Source conversion, pulling the fuse won't do anything. You now have the thermo wax valve controlling the fan. When they fail, it can cause high coolant temperatures. I would call Source and explain your problem. They might warrant the wax valve if it's the problem. They will tell you how to bypass the valve which will run the fan on high. If this eliminates the over heating, then the wax valve might be the problem.

I too suggest a conversation with Source Engineering. I also would suggest validating that the temp sensor is within spec too... A faulty temp sensor could cause lots of confusion:)!

Please keep us in the loop on what you find out, as many (Myself included.) have the S.E. Wax Valve's...

The thermostat was changed and 2015 when Cummings did the load tested using the dynamometer. I will keep you all as to my progress. It may take awhile because we are leaving the country for a couple weeks.

I had to replace my fan motor/priority valve to fix my overheating problem. I have replaced my fan controller three or four times thus far. With the last heating problem I could not get or force my fan to go more than about 1100 RPM which is not enough to cool the engine even under light loads.

If you force the fan into high speed by whatever means you choose and the fan does not sound like a helicopter then you have a problem. You will know if your fan kicks into high. If it does goes into high it will not be the fan motor/priority valve.

I could not tell if you checked or are going to check with a digital tach but that is what I used to tell the RPM of the fan.

Chances are it is not the hydraulic pump if your steering is OK but any good hydraulic shop can test that component. They put a gauge inline with the hydraulic hose and check the PSI from the pump. If it is not the controller or pump the it will be the fan/priority valve.

I ordered mine through Bernsetein or something like that with a 13 week delivery time from Europe.

This is great information to have. The motor/priority valve problem is one that doesn't come up often. Bypassing the wax valve will help confirm this.
