HWH Leveling

HI gang, I have a question or 2 about the HWH leveling. How long should it typically take for coach to level...say starting from a near flat surface.

I have had my coach for less than 1 season,  and it seems that it leveled pretty quickly when I first started leveling it... and now, the pump seems to keep running until I hit the emergency stop button. If the back is high, the front will Lower very quickly by dumping air, and then when the pump kicks on for back, it will run for 5 minutes, and again, I will hit emergency stop. Any comments would be appreciated.

Less than a minute normally. The only time I had that issue is when the coach was starting from very unleveled position. I had to put some blocks under the front wheels and try again.

Either the pump is not making air or you have a leak in the suspension system. Try leveling with the coach running and watch the aux air gauge.

30 seconds or less unless one corner is too high so it pumps and pumps. That can lead to popping a shock, bad. In that case, as I always have a level on the floor when the bubble is close. . . Good enough.

You might want to get on level ground dump the air and then level. The level sensor may have fallen or come loose.

If you level with the engine running and the coach is not level the sensor has come loose or fallen. If it is level then and you get the red light to go out then you most likely have a leak or a bad valve.

A question: I believe I have been told before to hold the dump air button down until it finishes. Not really sure when that is.

Air bags getting old. They begin to leak. I had to change mine on my 99 Intrigue. Got Eric Olstrom to do them and shocks also readjusted the ride height.
By the way to everyone out there Eric Olstrom has moved over to Premium RV Group in Gilbert AZ. His phone has not changed. Glad he got away from Desert Autoplex. I wouldn't let those folks work on my bicycles.

Had a similar problem on my 2004 Intrigue. The source of the problem was an exit plug dislodged in the aux pump. The pump came with 3 air exit ports with one plumbed to feed the HWH system and the other two having what appeared to be pressed in rather than threaded plugs. When I tried to level I heard a strange air leak noise coming from the aux pump compartment and found that one of the extra exit ports had lost its plug. If that is your problem you will need to go to an autoparts store that carries brass plugs that will fit the exit port.

The instructions for leveling my coach say to start from the drive height. It will start with dumping air on the high point if after lowering to the bottom then it will add air to the other corners to bring it to level this process can take a couple minutes. If it cannot reach level mine keeps trying so I use the emergency stop

The leveling will go faster if the engine is running (engine compressor is much more capable than the little "maintenance" unit). We always level and run out the slides before shutting down the engine. I'd guess leveling typically takes 15-30 seconds, unless we're on a serious slope.

We have had one site where there wasn't enough suspension travel to get level. In that case I had to run the front wheels onto blocks - one more reason not to shut down before getting level...

Lee I have leveled the coach under the most extreme circumstances imaginable at both ends and I have never broken a shock doing so. How is this possible? I think you have to be fully raised and moving to do that.

Also sometimes the Parker Air Dryer on the auxiliary pump can have two things add to your fun:

1) Hard water crystalizes and can sometimes make the air valve stick in the open position

2) The electric control on the air valve goes out, and the valve is left in the open position. (As I recall, when you put the coach into level mode, it sends the signal for the valve to be closed, so that air pumps air output feeds to the air bags for leveling activity. When leveling is completed, the power is turned off to the valve, and it defaults back into the open position for the moisture to escape from the Parker Air Dryer canister/glass bowl.

I've had both of the above problems happen from time to time. Along with the more common and already mentioned leveler have problems too...

Forgot to mention in my previous post. That if the electric valve does stop working, and the Parker Air Dryer valve remains open. That you can work around this by getting a brass or even plastic cap, and remove the valve and cap off the threads. This will allow the air pressure to build up for normal leveling activity. Then go out an manual remove the cap, so the air dryer bowl can dry out. I did this for about 5 weeks, until I could get a replacement electric valve.

(MacGiver'd a cap. Home depot had the right brass thread that i needed, but it was open for 1/8 tubing to go thru it. Went to the hardware bin, and found a bolt with flanged head that fit snug into the inside of the fittings hole, and added two nuts to the the treads to snug it up air tight. I keep that in my 'just in case I need it' assorted parts bin - but frankly hope I don't need it again:)!)

I had a Mud Dabber,  lay its mud in the Right front exhaust port  leveling manifold. Plugged it completely , the aux would not shutoff. Ordered new valve and did not see the blockage until I removed the valve.

I recently put new KONI shocks on my coach and started breaking shocks. Don't know if KONI changed their materials or assembly, but I couldn't raise the coach without breaking a shock. I eventually had to get a strap kit to limit my lHWH lift. If CC makes a strapping kit, then it's a known problem.

PS certain coaches with Tag rear axle Koni says use the normal shock for an Allure or Intrigue. when you require the Magna shock model.

The shocks are probably wrong. They are probably too short, or do not have the needed travel.

A while back I discovered both my original rear shocks were broken. Upon seeking replacements and talking with Koni, it turned out that Country Coach had put the wrong model Koni's on my coach when it was built. They were too short as Mikee says.

Thanks everyone for all the responses to the HWH problem. I am anxious to dive in and try some of the fixes, starting with the easiest ones of course. Due to me not being a full timer, I have limited time, so Please don't think I am not reporting my findings. I definitely will post the solution as soon as I can. Thanks again for all the good advice.
