Tire Size Question

My original tires were TOYO R12. The last two sets were/are Michelin XZE* which are R12 tires. Current set is about seven years old and the "checking" is bothering me again like the last set.

I want new tires and decided on the Michelin XZA2 which in reading is a 295/80 tire and a softer ride. You that have the ZXA2 seem to like them. When I called my dealer he said that the ZXA2 was a R11 tire and since the sticker in my coach stated R12 he could not put the ZXA2 on. He also said with the R11 I could pick some takeoff speed but could lose some MPG due to the size/revolutions of the R11.

My question is for those using the ZXA2, what does your sticker state? Mine is R12 but I have a single axle. Could be different for those with tags. I think the R11 will fit my rims but doubt my dealer will put them on.

I'd call some other tire dealers.

We had one set of 12R XZE*'s that treated us well. I wanted to try the XZA2's for the as mentioned bit better ride, and also better rolling resistance (Suppose that is 'less':)!) - figure every little bit helps on MPG.

No problem the TCI Truck Center (Until recently, owned by Michelin, as I understood it.) installing 295/80's. I do not consider these to be 11R's in any way.

I like the XZA2's. Not as robust and capable of taking hits on rough roads and or curb contact as the thicker wall (And much heavier too.) XZE*'s. But same Load Range, and as I recall, the same PSI per four corner weight.

You might offer to have them right a comment on the invoice that you fully understood it was your responsibility to use the 295/80's, and sign it for them. But, my instincts is the tire shop has other tires that provide much higher profit margins for them then the Michelin...

You can change to the 295/80R22.5 XZA2 Energy or X Coach HL Z without any issue.
The 12R22.5 XZE2 is taller and carries less load than the 295/80R22.5 choices (7,390 lbs for XZE2; 7,830 lbs for XZA2, 8,270 for X Coach HL Z. The X Coach HL Z is new to the U.S. Michelin offering but is well established in Europe for bus/coach operations.
Of the three tires mentioned, the X Coach HL Z is the most fuel efficient, followed by the XZA2 Energy.

Concerning the RPMS, there is a 2.6% variance in RPMs at full tread depth of both tires when new. If you switch to 295/80R22.5s and as you wear them away, the difference in odometer speed and actual speed will grow wider. For example, when the odometer reads 60 mph, on new 295/80R22.5s, you will actually be going 58.5 mph. When the tires are half worn (9/32"), when the odometer reads 60 mph, you will actually be going 57.6 mph.

You can switch tire sizes to something that is not posted on your vehicle placard- no law against it. You simply need to respect whatever the carrying capacity of the "weakest link" , whether it is the wheel, the tire, or the axle rating. Pat

Coach Sticker says 12R and I'm running the XZA2 size 315's all the way around. I believe the originals were 295's. Speedo is slightly off due to the largest diameter. The PO said the 315's are a much nicer ride.

I have decided to use the Michelin XZA2 295/80.

Thanks to Pat on the Michelin X Coach HL Z. It would take my dealer a couple of weeks to get these in and he could provide no reference to anyone using them. I am sure it is a good tire.

For anyone interested in the pricing:here in South Carolina:

XZA2 Energy - $650.92 each. Six out the door is $4578.40

X Coach HL Z - $723.08 each. Six out the door $5055.64.
