Mystery noise coming from drive shaft area

We used the motor home to go to agility trials last weekend. Trip there was uneventful. Even rolled over Afton Mtn (VA) on I-64 with speed to spare. Coming home my hubby felt some vibration in the steering wheel. I could feel the vibration in the back. Figuring it was something to do with the rear, we pulled over. All rear tires (4) seemed to be in order. He decided to dump the air and air it back up, just to make sure the coach was at proper driving level. No change in what we were feeling.

We took it easy and made it home. Eddie checked all the tires again and found the passenger inside rear was flat! Took the coach to the place we purchased the tires in May. Found to be the bad valve stem. No damage to tires.

Thought we were good to go for this weekend's dog shows in MD. Took the coach out for a spin tonight. As soon as he let up, going around a curve, I heard an odd noise coming from the rear again! Everything is free wheeling fine, accelerated fine. The noise is heard when you let off on the gas when speed is over 50 mph. And, you may hear it a little when he got back into a some. No mystery noise at slower speeds.

Wondered if something was up with the turbo or even the exhaust and muffler but the noise seems to be in the center of the coach, at the rear axil area. Not over the engine area. If it was the drive shaft, why would the noise only happen during a decel and a little bit when getting back into it at speed? Very odd.

Eddie is going to run the coach around to a large truck mechanic we know. At least he has a pit so they can get under the coach and inspect the area in question. Not interested in taking a chance with most of drive being on I-95 with four dogs and fours away from home. Dread the idea of having to motel it.

Any ideas what could be the issue?

It does sound like a U joint going. I replaced one of mine, found out that there are two grease fittings on them and only one of them had ever had grease in it. Possible only one of the needle bearing cups is starting to go or has lost a couple of needles? Not easy to see until it gets really bad, a lot of vibration.

Just my experience.

Since I just rebuilt the driveshaft on my Jeep last weekend i'll agree X3. But, I also developed a vibration when one of my coach's tires began to delaminates/fail...or you may have lost wheel weights and are out of balance. If the vibration is the driveshaft the u-joints will need replacing or it'll get progressively worse. If it's a tire it may fail $pectacularly as mine did.

Symptom described would point to a drivetrain issue.

That being said, do keep and eye on that tire. Running on a tire that is deflated could cause damage not only to that tire, but the xtra weight being carried on the dually that still held air - could have caused damaged to it.

I admit I'm a bit 'something' retentive when it comes to tires. I would have insisted they both be replaced. I'd want to be fair with he tire dealer. So if not new when the valve was messed up, I'd prorate them based upon age. If new, and a bad valve stem was installed by the dealer - I'd expect them to make me whole...

You might call the tire manufacture's tech support line, and ask for their opinion what took place...

So you could have two issues needing attention. Best of luck to you,

Thanks for the input publically and privately. When we had the drive shaft and rear axil looked at, all was in fine order. The mechanic/neighbor/friend took the time to grease several items while under the coach. He said all looked great!

Also going on at the same time has been when you set the coach to auto level, the left rear isn't coming up as it should. Jim Green from MD contacted us, saying he had similar issues once when his coach wasn't leveled correctly. Was putting the drive shaft out of alignment. Interestingly, when you manually level our coach, bringing up that left rear, there is no longer any mystery noise! She is rolling down the road!

A couple of the guys thought it may be a broken baffle in the muffler making noise when backpressure occurred. I disagreed saying the noise at the drive shaft/U-joint area was a long way from the muffler location. I understand sound transference but this was a reach.

Now, for Eddie to address the solenoid valve at the left rear. See if he can get the auto leveling to behave again. :-)
