I looked into purchasing a warranty when we bought our coach in early 2016. I looked at several companies, carefully comparing the different coverages and premiums. The best offer was through Wholesale Warranty offering a policy underwritten by Viking. (Sample Policy attached). At the time, our coach had just over 80,000 miles on it and is a 2007. The offer was for $6,626 but specifically EXCLUDED engine, engine components and drivetrain plus a long list of other items. Since I do much of the regular maintenance / fixing myself on the house side of the coach, I didn't see the value. Dealing with extended warranties on vehicles can be a real exercise in frustration.
The only tips I have for you are:
- Realistically evaluate what it might cost to replace major components of the house and the chassis and weigh that against the premium cost.
- Determine what you could fix / replace yourself vs. having an RV or Engine place do the work. I don't do any engine/chassis work - because I don't have tools, lifts or the mechanical knowledge of those systems. I might attempt fluid replacement, etc myself, but that is usually done pretty cheaply.
- Be sure to read, re-read, read again and have someone (like your insurance agent - who reads these things all the time) read the extended warranty contract, looking for exclusions, non-coverage, vague descriptions, etc. The only major expense we've had thus far (that hasn't been self induced body work) was a split heater hose going to the powerpack in the front, which necessitated a guy pulling 70 feet of heater hose up to the front of the vehicle, due to wear in several places. The cost was $50 for the hose and $1500 for the labor. And it wouldn't have been covered. I watched them do it, it was a huge pain and they earned their pay.
- My guess is that if your coach is over 8-10 years old or has > 50k miles, you may forego the warranty and instead start a monthly payment into a Coach Kitty for repairs. That's what we do.
